Newly installed debian sid & saved debian wheezy home would like to transfer files
I recently installed debian sid & saved my old debian wheezy home, would like to transfer all files & bookmarks from old home to the new home, which are on the same disk.
I already tried to import bookmarks, but firefox doesn't see them. I also copied & pasted the bookmarksbackup but it didn't work. |
how did u try to import firefox bookmarks?
did u have a problem finding your bookmarks? I did the following to try to find solution: 1-I opened my home directory using Nautilus 2- I opened the View menu then chose "Show hidden Files" or simply press Ctrl + h 3- go to the folder .mozilla (notice the dot) 4- go to the folder firefox 5- press Ctrl + f then type "bookmark" (without the quotes) then you will find your bookmarks right click on any file you want to copy then About the other files: identify the partition holding your root /home directory if you have problems with this step just ask again in this post waiting for your move..... ---------- Post added 01-19-12 at 05:01 AM ---------- how did u try to import firefox bookmarks? did u have a problem finding your bookmarks? try searching google using the terms "firefox bookmarks backup"

You could copy your ~/.mozilla directory -as well as other important files- from your old Wheezy home to your new Sid's user directory (it will copy all your bookmarks, extensions, configurations) etc. Or you could even tell Sid through /etc/fstab to use the old /home partition as its /home partition (unless you want to delete the old /home partition for some reason).

I myself would just copy it over from one /home to the other, but then again I have had multiple distros/variations and only used 1 /home |
@kareempharmacist I only found bookmarksbackup I tried using iceweasel import fnction while the partition was mounted & also tried copy & paste, I can however go thru backup files & copy & enter them 1 x1 in my brouser to save them but that would be very time consuming also limits my learning experience.
I looked at rsync but my understanding of it is that it has to be a functional system, correct me if I am wrong please. I also am however able to copy & paste my documents but that inhibits the learning experience also. My objective is to do an all-in-one transfer if possible. |
I am tring to help you but I don't know exactly what do u want
for learning experience I recommend this book "GNU Linux Basic" http://ifile.it/k6y3fo/__GNU_Linux_Basic.pdf I also recoomend reading any book about linux administration specifically file management and file systems.I can Send u links for some books if u want .and anything u didn't understand just ask about it here I enjoy the learning experience parallel with u |
I ended up just doing a copy & paste job, so all of my files & are transfered including firefox bookmarksbackup.html.
The only thing is now I have to decypher the html for my bookmarks &manually put them in. |
If you copy your .mozilla directory from your old /home/user directory to the new one, you won't have to mess with individual files manually; the Iceweasel in Sid will use these settings just as the Iceweasel in Wheezy did (you will have all your bookmarks, extensions and settings back).
Cheers. |
Thank you I transferred .mozilla to desktop as the path was so long I couldn't get the full path after that I executed "cp -r .mozilla /home/user"
The bookmarks didn't show untill I remove the original, but it worked. |
so I think you should now mark it as solved
did you have a look at the book or what ? |
I didn't look at the book just searched on line for copy directory command.
