How can "root" unlock a locked screen in Gnome?
 

Is there a way for the root account to unlock a locked screen (without resetting the system)? It only lets me enter a password, but I can't change the user - is there a way around this? If not, can I telnet in from another system and do something from the command line?

Yeah, you could probably telnet/SSH into the machine and kill the screensaver process.

So... nobody, in seven years, has figured out how the sysadmin can walk up to a Gnome session that the user has walked away from, and unlock their screen, so it can be logged out cleanly? Amazing. Under CDE, it was as simple as entering root's password into the unlock dialog.

Reboot the system and here you will not see screensaver at a time now you can login through root and disable to screensaver

Cmmon man, how critical is this in operations? Just a simple ssh and reboot the server will do.

Similar problem here (SuSE Linux Enterprise and openSUSE) with GNOME Desktop from time to time.


Solution for self was to select: "Switch User"

Log in as another user, then login as root, where can boot to closed the locked open session.


Alternately, after look up erring users password, log out, log in as them, then log them out.


Recall being able to leave them a message for when they next logged in.
