FreeDos Screen on Startup
 

I am in between a noob and and expert :) i have tried to install Ubuntu more than a few times on the same laptop. to no avail. i have been successful installing the same Ubuntu on a Virtual PC. i don't get what the difference is between the 2 why one is so easy and the other so hard. but i figured i would try again.
PROBLEM!!
i burned a copy of my iso image on to a cd and start to boot from it and the i get a free-dos screen. which i hear is good. then it says "selected page frame e000 not available, searching automatically no suitable page frame found. EMS functions limited"

than after i tells me what it found for hard drives and cd drives it asks me "A:\>"


Question??
What happened
How do i fix this
where do i go from here.

FreeDOS is not related in anyway to Ubuntu.
So seeing FreeDOS is not a good sign, something went wrong here. I assume that you have bought a laptop with FreeDOS installed (they almost never deliver a laptop without OS), so your machine is not booting from CD, as intended, but from the harddisk.
So the first things that come to my mind are:
1. Have you checked the boot priority in the BIOS, so that the CD drive is the first to be checked.
2. How did you burn the CD? As image, as data CD? If you open the CD on a different computer, which files do you see?

the computer is running Windows XP. so somewhere it is getting freedos and it not from the hard drive.

Steps I Took

Burned cd first as data disk with extracted files from iso
burned cd next as data disk with ISO image only

got free dos screen both times

downloaded ISO from Ubuntu.com when 11.10 first came out.

You have to burn the disk as image, not as data disk. You can do that easily with the free Windows tool imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/

Did you use that iso file to boot and load the virtual machine?

yes i just used the iso image to run the virtual machine using oracle's virtual Box.




will try and burn image only not a data disk and will try again will let you know results.


RESULTS

it worked thank you so much for the quick help. i am going to install later. Can't wait have wanted Ubuntu for so long now i can finally have it. :)
