Can't load linux on ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
trying to load linux on ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mother board. I have tried Red hat 9 and Mandrake 9.1 both have been unsucsessful. Really new to linux I had Mandrake on my old machine before it crashed and played around with it for a while. computer i am loading it onto has a AMD Athlon 1.15 GHz., with 512 Mb of DDR 400. When i load Mandrake 9.1 it asks for disk 1 which i am installing from i have checked the md5sum and it is correct but still says need disk one. I have even redowloaded disk one and it still comes up with the same message. Red hat loads on fine but then won't boot it freezes during boot up and restarts. Now i am back to window xp.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |
try setting your Main Board Bios settings to default, also go to Nvidia and get there linux drivers, then AMD get theres, then ASUS and get theres
|
Will try that but my Bios is on default settings. When I get these drivers how would i go about lloading them on? I am assumeing that when and if I get redhat loaded on I would just go into configuration before booting up. is this correct? Thanks for the help.

Hey I also have the Asus A7N8X Deluxe but w/Athlon 2700 333 and I am having somewhat similar problems with Red Hat. When I boot to RH the screen goes blank after all the commands go past. I have a GeForce FX 5200 and I chose GeForce FX for the video driver. I don't know if these problems r even related but the thing about having the same Mobo caught my eye. Newbie Linux user here, need some help!!! Want to get away from the horrible world of Micro$uck!!!.

Glad to know that i am not the only one. The video card that i have is the gforce 4 mx 440 8x. Did you have any of the problems that i appear to be having? and if you did what did you do to fix the problem? I am in the same boat as you with the Micro$uck!!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of people seem to be having problems with RH 9 and the NForce chipset used on the A7N8X. In the appendix of either the User's Manual or the Customization Guide (on RH's support site) there is a description of a number of boot options which you can try as a workaround for boot/install freezes. If you can at least get the system to boot to a command prompt using one of those options you can probably get things sorted from there.
As mentioned, you should definitely get the manufacturers' driver packages; the sound, video, and network subsystems can cause endless headaches without them. |
Sry, I don't know how to fix those problems. I haven't tried anything but RH, and the only other problem I had was it was freezing during loading, I just sorta let the comp sit for a few days and it worked. How, I don't know.

Thanks for everyones help I got RH9 to work by downloading all the drivers. I would of prefered Mandrake but oh well as long as I have LINUX and not Micro$uck It is just fine by me.

Cool, glad it worked for you.

How in the world do I install the drivers in the command prompt.
:newbie: |
What type of files are they?

Its the all in one file from Asus, a zip file when opened has three files named:
NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0241.rh73up.athlon NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0241.rh73up_2.4.18_5.athlon NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0241.suse80.i386 Heres where I downloaded the drivers in case that helps (its the second one from the top) http://www.asus.com/support/download...Language=en-us |
I just figured out that they were RPM files.
|
RPMs are usually installed with the following command:
rpm -ivh filename The thing is that you seem to have three files which are intended for three different system configurations (I could be wrong- anyone feel free to correct me). I've also found no installation instructions on the ASUS website, so I can't tell you exactly where to go from here. |
