389 DS Authentication

All Experts,

I have configured 389 Directory Server in Centos 5.8. I have added some users and groups with DS Console. Now i want to authenticate my windows and linux systems with 389-DS. I have found no information to get system login (Authenticated) by googling it. How can i add systems in Directory server.
Kindly suggest that what changes are required at server and client end (Widnows or Linux) to be authenticated by Directory Server.

Thanks in advance.

you don't add systems to it. It's just a back end database.

Seems like a pretty odd thing to have done without any idea on what to do next..?

But anyway, if you want windows too, have a look at configuring Samba as a domain controller with the ldap back end. plenty of howto guides aroudn to achieve this.

Thanks for your kind reply. There is no centralized information about it. But suppose i do not want to use samba. I want to use 389 Directory server as active directory or you can say an alternative for M$ Active Directory. Any new information is highly appreciated.

With Thanks,

if you want to use 389DS as Active Directory then that suggests you really don't understand what the two things are, and how they relate at all. Samba + ldap gives you the bare bones of a AD domain. My above answer stands.

I would also say that I hate 389DS. It's overbearing and clucnky and ancient. I'd strongly suggest you ditch it in favour of openldap.

Thanks for criticism. Will you give me some suggest so that i can move in positive direction. You mean to say that 389 DS is not going to solve the purpose.

Thanks for your humble help.
