Setting up remote access

I'd like to be able to access my computer from the university I go to. I've done some looking around on google and as I already knew, ssh is the way to go. But then it kinda stops there. Exactly what do I need, openssh + ?? I also know I can use X forwarding, which seems cool, I could log in and see MY desktop. I mainly want to set this up so I can get access to my documents and if the need arises, use a program or two. So anyone know of a good howto that will help me? Oh yea, I'm a new to this side of linux, so keep that in mind.

Newish kde comes with a program called "Remote Desktop Connection", which will allow you to take control of your remote desktop.
