What is a good Linux Phone
Is there a good mobile phone on wich I can use linux packages?
|
Android is linux.
|
Maemo on the Nokia N900 is a derivative of Debian.

Root
Does Android have root access to the system?

That depends on the phone. Natively, Android does not have root access, but many of the phones can be easily rooted (almost certainly voiding the warranty). However, there have been moves by some of the manufacturers (like Motorola and the DroidX) to make rooting much more difficult, or impossible. |
Maemo is debian based linux OS for mobile. And yeah.. android is also linux and it's rocks.. busybox and everything on android. :D

The Nokia N900 has some powerful.
I like this phone because Its graphics acceleration is so nice as Compare to other. |
I've just got HTC Desire. I installed a terminal app on it, but it's pretty useless without rooting it. I've got no permissions to create anything via terminal
What I like are some programs that let me control my desktop computer via ssh. I'm completely new to the Android thing. I think sooner or later I'll root the phone and properly play with it. |
Yeah... Most phones have ARM processors, which means they can have Linux distributions (like Chromium OS) installed onto them via an ARM build target. Of course, you will have to know the device file for the phone to use the 'image_to_usb.sh' command.
Or, download my custom script that executes all the build commands necessary to build Chromium OS for ARM. Here is the x86 variant. |

HI
I like nokia and i think that Nokia is suit to you and your application. I don't like other brand but Nokia. It runs well and application is good good luck for you Cheers |
Maemo on the n900 is a powerful linux super computer phone. It can be overclocked to 1.2 ghz can dual (and more) boot into nitdrod(android) and can run easy debian. It will also run OpenOffice and the Gimp.... has a built in 32 gig and a micro sd slot for another 32 gig if you wish.....and much much more!
http://openattitude.com/2010/03/19/e...-for-the-n900/ http://temporaryland.wordpress.com/2...p-on-the-n900/ if you are prepared to wait a little time then Nokia is releasing at the end of the year a new smartphone called the N9. This will be running on the Meego Operating system....specs are just leaked sources so i cant give any true specs on this as yet But rumour has it it will be an awsome device. |
The N900 is the best mobile computer around. If you want a mobile computer that fits in your pocket, then the N900 is unmatched. Android devices are usually tuned and closed by OEM. Android is a java platform that happens to run linux as a kernel. The N900 is a full blown computer and Maemo is a full blown GNU/linux distro. You can dual boot Android on the N900 too.

I looked into this a while ago and could not find any handset that would work with Linux. All model I found back then (~6 months ago) would support Windows only.
|
On a more general note (shamelessly hijacking thread) -- what phone would you buy that would give you the most lfexibility in the future to upgrade/change operating systems, port to another carrier, etc?
I see all these threads about best phones for using linux in the here and now, and little about phones that can grow with you and won't give you buyer's remorse in 9 months. |
