Can you tell me the reasons you choose linux mint instead of ubuntu?
What are the advantages?

Mint is a different color and includes many non-free components that Ubuntu makes you install afterwards.
This is also a reason many people choose Ubuntu over Mint.

Hmmm ... interesting to see if Mint stays with Gnome or not.

No; they are sticking with Gnome 2.x for the time being.

Yes. That plus the fact that they have Flash pre-installed is why I recommend it to newbies over Ubuntu.

Hi, I installed Ubuntu 10.04 in September 2010 and I just love it. When 10.10 came out I was so happy with 10.04 that I didn't update. I however did decide to have a look at what was new and updated to 11.04. What a mistake. I found it to be a step backwards for Ubuntu. After two days I just got out my disc and downgraded back to 10.04. Unity put me off and The classic setting in 11.04 Just was not right.

As for mint it works straight out of the blocks. It has VLC as standard and is a zippy, light coloured operating system. I have it running on my smaller machine in another room. I am torn between it and 10.04. They are both just great operating systems. Mint for me is better than 11.04 but I would say its a draw between it and 10.04.

So for me with Ubuntu 10.04 or Mint 11 you cant go wrong.

I just installed 11 Katya. I just wish you could encrypt the drive like Fedora, but encrypting /home is OK. I've seen Ubuntu before and I just don't like its layout. Heck, Mint even makes Gnome tolerable & I'm usually into KDE. The encrypt script didn't work for me either.

Its like anything else. What one user finds to be friendly is something that another doesn't. The thing with Ubuntu is that it is common enough for all the other programmers and distros to look at it. Thus, there are a lot of "improved" spins of Ubuntu that use it as a base. Other's fix its mistakes.

While Ubuntu is user friendly, they hide too much of the machine from the user sort of like MAC and M$ does, but not nearly as bad of course. The menu and options just aren't organized as well as they could be. Take a look at Mepis or Mint to see what I mean.

The same isn't true for Kubuntu, however. If you must have Ubuntu, then the KDE desktop works a lot better. Kubuntu is a very nice distro indeed. :twocents:

The thing with Mint Katya 11 is that it is technically Gnome, but in name only.... barely. Normally, I can't stand regular Gnome. I can't ever find what I need to find to do anything technical beyond opening Firefox. Mint 11 fixed that.

I haven't played around with the Unity desktop & so honestly I can't form an opinion of that one.

If you drank the buntu kool aid of easy to use good for you-- Also you should tell new user who does not have high speed net service buntu don't do basic things like play DVD's or MP3's Unity is not playing nice with NVIDIA cards (Mint 11 works on same coumputer) " Maybe as some say Linux Mint is Ubuntu done Right"

I do not know what are you trying to critisize about Ubuntu?
Point out its weaknesses, everything has room for improvement.

Nothing is wrong with Ubuntu per se, but Kubuntu, Mint and Mepis seem to e more logically laid out. On the command line side and underlying structure, they are fairly similar. It is the desktops and visible user interfaces where the differences can be found.

Ubuntu is fairly popular and has made inroads into business and even mainstream computer stores, for which it should be commended. On a grade scale from A to F, like in middle school I'd give it a B- with Kubuntu and Mepis getting an A and Mint Katya getting an A+ despite using Gnome when normally I lean towards KDE.

Mint's Gnome is far from typical. The abilities out of the box for multi-media are spectacular. No other distribution has said you have a Lenovo 3000 N100, and we are fully compatible with that. Of course, I've gotten other distros to run with my machine as well. Its just never been on any HCL before.

Still Ubuntu is far better then M$, far safer as well & far more affordable for the average person ina bad economy then a MAC. I would say that Mint is roughly equal to a MAC in terms of what it can do without modification and how its abilities can be extended.

Answer to your question is - if you(or parents) bought Windows 7 you are using right now then stick with it or dual-boot with any distro you like. Linux is about choice and free so you can't go wrong in this area. You can always install some other distro if you won't like it. This is question which only you can answer because you will be using that Linux not us.

in my country, most people are using Cracked Windows.
