How to mount video cd in LinuxMint 9 Fluxbox

but it gets detected in OpenSuse 11.2 with Xfce, what to do i case of Fluxbox?

wpeckham 01-29-2011 02:46 PM

VCD

What do you mean by 'detected' in this context?

Aquarius_Girl 01-29-2011 02:58 PM

Sorry, I meant it is not mounted. fdisk -l shows nothing.

Aquarius_Girl 01-30-2011 12:25 AM

After inserting the disk:
Code:

anisha@aquarius ~ $ sudo -s

I may be missing the point of your question here and apologize if I am, but I shall dive in anyway. I am an enthusiastic Fluxbox fan and have used it quite happily with Slackware, Ubuntu, and Debian.

Fluxbox will not display any kind of indication on the desktop that removable or hotplug media has been inserted and auto-mounted. Fluxbox is strictly a window manager.

If XFCE shows the mounted media, that tells me that your install can detect the media.

If you open a file manager such as nautilus or konqueror, it should show the mounted media.

Thanks but perhaps I forgot to mention that Xfce is on Suse 11.2 and not on Linux Mint. AFAIR I opened thunar but didn't find any indication for the Audio CD and fdisk also doesn't show anything.

Any help?

Tinkster 01-30-2011 10:32 PM

fluxbox doesn't have HAL or other desktop service provider integration; you want
it mounted, you mount it. Simple as that.

Cheers,
Tink

Aquarius_Girl 01-30-2011 10:38 PM

Oh yes, I didn't try to mount it, I will today and see what happens, thanks.

and if I type only 'mount' on the root terminal it shows everything from '/etc/mtab', so it will show the audio CD too? otherwise how should I know the exact name of the AUdio CD?

Tinkster 01-30-2011 10:44 PM

Audio CD's don't have a file-system - they can't be mounted. As for knowing
which CD is in the drive; no idea how to look that up - I usually know what
I put in the drive.

Cheers,
Tink

You told me to mount it and now you are saying it can't be mounted????

I actually meant the name by which system recognizes the CD!

Your initial post was about VCD, not audio CDs. The former have a file-system, and the media can
be mounted, the latter don't, and can't.

dmesg | grep CD
Commonly something live /dev/sr0

Cheers,
Tink

I didn't know that Audio and Video CDs are treated differently, thanks for ALL the information, so what I supposed to do in case of Audio CD, how to make them show up somewhere when I need to copy from them?

Tinkster 01-30-2011 10:58 PM

Hmmm open the app you want to use to copy? E.g., k3b works rather well. cdparanoia if
commandline is your thing.

Aquarius_Girl 01-30-2011 11:05 PM

cdparanoia looks promising, I'll try that, thanks again for all the help.

Aquarius_Girl 01-31-2011 10:32 AM

What to do now? See the below output for the Video CD.
