Frankenserver's Xfce 4.4.2 Desktop

WARNING: The screenshots linked herein contain federal seals, prominent colours (green) and spooky shading, which some might find NSFW. Viewer discretion is advised. ;)

Although my previous screenshot was poking fun at corp769's wallpaper, I thought I'd unveil my actual wallpaper, as well as elaborate on Frankenserver's desktop tweaks, in this brand-spankin-new sub-forum. :)

Starting Theme: Xfce-4.0
Style: Moheli
Wallpaper: Frankenserver logo by DJRcreative (me), and stock LAMP logo, on black.

A transparent panel with opaque icons technically isn't available but for Xfce 4.8, and Compositor's transparency affects the icons too. Mine is an illusion that only works on solid (portions of a) wallpaper, by adding to the /usr/share/themes/<theme>/gtk-2.0/gtkrc file:
Code:

style "panel"
{
    bg[NORMAL] = "#000000"  # black, otherwise colour-picker matched
    fg[NORMAL] = "#000000"  #
}

widget_class "*Panel*" style "panel"
widget "*Panel*" style "panel"
class "*Panel*" style "panel"

I also replaced purple (#606080) with logo colour-matched green. The CPU graph & time are actually part of the right-justified panel over Conky, both sized & configured to align. System Tray extends left from the panel. The Xfce Menu is only available at the mouse pointer's tip via Settings > Desktop > Behavior tab, as is the Task List, though there's also [Alt]+[Tab]. Terminal's background transparency is through Edit > Preferences > Appearance, not Compositor. That's it. KISS. :)

Cool stuff...is the see-tru comfortable to work with? I have the (weird?) habit of opening everything related on the same desktop. That would mean that on desktop 3 there can be several (half a dozen) terminals open at the same time...

Looks cool, you deserve to be proud of this, much better than the previous one with the "seal" in the back :D

Thor
By the way...saw more of your stuff on Flickr...so, what's with the can? ;)

Thanks. :) I am, hence its own thread. (Nope, not humble. LOL!) But yeah, federal seals in backgrounds are lame. *cough*

Frankly, translucence serves three purposes:

1) Showmanship. One can't be cool unless their screenshot features transparency. ;)
2) Watermarking. Not that anyone would jack my logo, but one never knows. *shrug*
3) Copying. When following online tutorials, it's easier than repeated cut'n'paste into Terminal.

Otherwise, I don't see how people function with system-wide transparency. I lose sight of which window is in front of the other and end up bringing the wrong one forward, so I don't general use it. Personally, I never bother with multiple desktops/workspaces either, as "out of sight, out of mind." Multiple monitors would be nice, however...

Oh, geez. You weren't supposed to look at the rest of my sorely neglected "portfolio". LOL! I never captioned that set? Whoops. I get distracted easily. ;) As for the can? Nothing overtly profound, really. Just nonsense...

This is why I can never post a sceenie. :P I only use transparency with KDE4.X, not with Xfce.

I find that when I go back to windows, what I jmiss most in normal day-to-day usage is workspaces (yes, I know you can hack windows to have workspaces. Last I tried using workspaces in windows it was nowhere near as good as in linux. I never use multipule monitors, even though I've had the option for years. Goes to show, what one person likes another will not.

Obviously, Thor_2.0 wasn't meant to see them, but that doesnt apply to me, right?

Hmmm, yeah...but I saw 'em anyway...the whole set is an ode to a symbol of an era: the sodacan...there is something artistic about it.

Still, cool at any rate!

Alright children, there's enough Flickr for everyone. Even though I don't care that much for the "A Coca-Cola Perspective" set, which I finally captioned, it gets all the attention. Figures... Thanks a lot, Thor. :p

Also, Frankenserver now has it's own set. And no, it doesn't look like this computer, though that one's more worthy of the name. LOL!

LOL - right you are...mine is as it looks: a wreck. Hey, there's a name (every project needs one) "roadkill"... :D
