intro & question

I was born in 1935 so I guess I'm what might be called "vintage."

My computer experience goes back to 1984 with a Kaypro 2X running CP/M (Oh, how I miss the MBASIC disc!). Then it was on through XP and Vista. That mess plus Win7 Starter which came on my HP Mini got me switched over to Ubuntu. Its gimmicky Unity Desktop got me into Linux Mint where I'm happily 'puterizing away now.

Question: The HP Mini has a built-in webcam which shows up as
"Bus 001 Device 002: ID 174:1124 Syntek"

How can I get this puppy up and running?

Software you can use on Mint for your webcam; guvcview or cheese. Just open a terminal and run: whereis guvcview or whereis cheese to see if they are installed. If so, just type either in the terminal and hit the Enter key and it should open. If you get no output showing either is installed, just install with: sudo apt-get install cheese.

Welcome to LQ elder!

Have a nice time.

You can use cheese to use the webcam.

One possibility is wxcam, there should be a package for it for Mint.
http://wxcam.sourceforge.net/
Try:
Code:

sudo apt-get install wxcam
EDIT:
Oh, yeah, I'd forgotten about Cheese.
+ I'm a slower typer than the other two.

Pardon the title... I've been driving FIATs since 1958.

OK, chaps, I did the apt-get install bit and it's there! Mint seems to be a little simpler (good or bad I'm not sure yet) than Ubuntu, but how do I create an icon for Cheese? I've tried right clicking on this 'n that but to no avail.

Ah! Answered my own question with a quick menu look and a right click in All Applications. Bingo! Pic attached.

Again, thanks a bundle. Y'all (I'm a former CT Yankee living in FL, USA) are top notch.
