New RTX 4060 Ti, Monitor unknown, stuck with limited/non-native resolution
The two (SLI) GTX960 video cards I had were below minimum spec for the latest game we're playing, so it was time to replace them.
I bought a single new RTX 4060 Ti and installed it today. It's working...sort of. My monitor is a Samsung S24E650, but the new video card won't recognize it. When I open Configure Display Settings/Monitor Preferences, the monitor is "Unknown default". The resolution is stuck at 1024 x 768 pixels, refresh rate at 76 Hz, and rotation is Normal. Clicking the Detect Monitors button has no apparent effect. All three of the drop-down boxes have only the single choice above. The native resolution of this monitor is 1920 x 1200 and if I recall correctly the refresh rate is supposed to be 60Hz (and only 60Hz). If I can get back to that, I'm happy. I am using Devuan Release 4 64-bit (chimaera), a derivative of Debian that lacks systemd. Kernel is 5.10.0-28-amd64x86_64. I use Mate desktop 1.24.1. I just updated everything via synaptic and noticed that some nvidia packages were part of that update. This PC dual boots to Windows 10. I get the correct native resolution in Windows, so it's not the hardware. CPU: Intel Core i5-6600k (3.5 GHz,4 real cores/no HT), 16GB DDR4, graphics: llvmpipe (LLVM 11.0.1 256 bits). Motherboard: ASUS Maximus Hero VIII, chipset Z170. Everything except the new video card is about seven years old. Is there an easy way to get back to 1920 x 1200 resolution? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. |
Kernel 5.10.0 may be too old for proprietary nvidia driver that's required for the RTX 4060 Ti. Update to a recent Kernel 6.

Unfortunately, the distribution upgrade to Devuan release 5 (daedalus) deleted Windows from the UEFI boot list, so now I gotta chase that.... |
Look in /etc/default/grub and you may find GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER="true" uncommented. If so, make if false and regenerate grub.cfg.
