My sound just STOPPED working.

I was listening to MP3s and when the song was done, I left for like 15 minutes to watch a segment of a show on TV, I come back to a fully DL'd movie that I was waiting to finish while I watched the show segment. I go to click it and there is no sound, so I thought the movie was fooked up. I click other files I have, and there's no sound for anything!

So, is there a way to see if it's just a software issue or a hardware issue? LOL, I didn't do anything, I just left and when I came back I had no sound, LOL. I tried to reboot seeing if it was just a quirk...still no sound. Tested speakers with an MP3 player, so they work.... Considering this computer is 99.9% internet and MP3 and video downloading/viewing, without sound....this REALLY sucks.....

Anybody?

I posted this in the software forum(considering I got no error messages or anything), but I think it's prolly a little more appropriate here....

what were you using to load up the movie?
i know if i simply type:
mplayer movie.avi
on my computer i will get no sound but when i type :
mplayer -ao oss movie.avi
and after i specify the audio i will get sound ...
so if it is mplayer that your using, then type :
mplayer -ao help
to get a list of options for you sound output
if its not mplayer and its something like xine then again just go into the setup page and just play with the settings ...

Well, I use the GUI of everything. So I just goto the directory and click the file and Mplayer loads and plays the vid. I've NEVER had a sound issue or anything.....

but here is what I got when I type mplayer -ao help:

oicdn@linux:~> mplayer -ao help

Just so ya said ya did it, try to open Kmixer and move the sliders all they way up, and ensure the red 'mute' light is deactivated on all except mic. Tell it to 'save settings' under file, and see if sound comes back. A quick sound check is kde-configuration-look/feel-system alerts

oicdn 01-28-2004 12:24 PM

Intresting. Nothing was muted, but I just opened it moved all the bars to the top and clicked the little locked box. And that particular video I played has no sound, but now my sound works...WTF? So I put everything back to where it was, and stuff works now....WTF was that? A quirk or what? It's like all I needed to do was OPEN Kmixer and sound came back...WTF?

oicdn 01-28-2004 01:05 PM

It's wierd....I just re-DLd that file, the sound still doesn't work, but it does something to my comp where it disables the sound, and I have to open the Kmixer and move all the bars to the top play a file, and the sound works.....then, I set them back to where they were, LOL. Sound still works.

I try to play that file, and there's no sound, it only happens after I DL it and play that particular vid for the 1st time.....odd.....

LinuxMWB 01-28-2004 02:25 PM

Odd indeed. But from my computive experiance has taught me that we are lucky they work at all. :-) Glad you got your bug squashed.

oicdn 01-28-2004 02:28 PM

LOL....quircky as hell...tried it a 3rd time...same thing, LOL
