Hi all,

The LM sensors package, how accurate is it?
I have a dual boot system now, I use windows XP and mandrake 8.1 the problem I am having is this. Bios reports cpu temp as being 50 C windows reports it as being 59 C using asus probe and Mandrake reports the temp as being 33 C
I am assuming that the windows program is flaky at best and that I have configured LM sensors incorrectly under Linux.
I am having difficulty working out the Factor and Offset settings.

can any one help with this?

How old is your motherboard.....?

Did you run the lm sensors chipset id program and add all the modules?

Apparently there have been problems with some boards as the temp monitoring hardware can be a bit flaky and the BIOS on some boards adds/subtracts too much from the temp display - something to do with compensating for where the hardware is.

Post your board/cpu/chipset specs (and the entries you made in the initrd file), and hopefully we can help......

My board is an Asus A7v133 the cpu is an Athlon XP 1800+
The Asus probe software is apparently very flaky (windows)
I ran sensors-detect and just added what it told me too add. I use Gkremll to display temps. There are settings there that can be used i assume to compensate for discrepencies. I just dont understand what needs to be done there. There are 2 settings Factor and Offsets.

As for the settings the program told me to put one lot in modules.conf and the others in any rc@ file

I am not overly concerned about this, just curious as to why there would be such a large discrepency between the bios and the 2 monitoring software.

It would seem from further investigation the on board sensors on my mother board are know to be a fairly inaccurate.

As a module is a viapro one, I'm assuming that the north and southbridge are both from Via. I seem to remember that Via chipsets can be a bit problematic with lm_sensors - which isn't much help to you, I know. When the temp hardware isn't up to scratch either, then it's just a grind getting it to work properly.

(It was for this reason that I went for Intel chipset on my latest board. Not the best, but it works when you want to make sure your cpu isn't frying).

The good news is that lm_sensors v2.6.4 looks like it is going to be released this month and according to the website, looks like it supports far more chipsets, including Via .... hope it does the trick.

BTW - no workarounds on the site or on the net?
