I need help configuring my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro video card in Mandriva 2009 please....

When I try to access the ATI Catalyst Control Center in the "system" menu, I recieve this error:

"There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following:

No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for your ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig"

I am rather "green" when it comes to Linux and could really use some help. I have absolutely NO idea where to even begin. Can someone offer some assistance?

Xfdrake informs me that there is a proprietory driver for my hardware and asks if I want to use it. I select yes, however, after logging out and back in, it asks the same thing again???

Try running aticonfig as root.

Try running aticonfig.

From a terminal or program? I'm not sure where this is located..... ? Are you referring to the ATI Catalyst Control Center?

From a terminal program! Start a shell console program, then:

> su
root: # aticonfig

If you want to read what the aticonfig is, then at a shell console:

> man aticonfig

Or do Alt & F2 type: konsole then click run to start a terminal.

Theoutdoorsman 01-11-2009 08:49 PM

From -Applications/Tools/Terminal I only see THIS when I run aticonfig:

[root@localhost ~]# >su
[root@localhost ~]# aticonfig
Usage: aticonfig [OPTION] ...
Parses an existing X-Server configuration file and modifies it to operate with
ATI products.

The following command-line options can be invoked as parameters:

ATI Initial Configuration:
--initial
Generate a default ATI device section in the configuration file which
is capable of loading the fglrx driver.
--initial=dual-head
Same as '--initial' but generate a basic dual head configuration file.
--initial=check
Identifies if the fglrx driver is present in configuration file...........etc.....etc......etc.

Following the instructions I recieve:

Error stating file '/root/Konsole': No such file or directory

Before choosing an option i think we should backup your current xorg.conf.

Type (as root exactly as seen here):
Code:

cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bkup
then press enter.

Now type
Code:

aticonfig --initial
When this process is done, type: exit twice to close the terminal.

Now log out and do: Alt & Ctrl & Bkspace to restart the xserver.

Now log back in and try to run the ATI Catalyst Control Center again.

You only type konsole, nothing else in front of that.

Theoutdoorsman 01-11-2009 09:39 PM

Same fault occurs.....awaiting further instructions.....?

Let's check if the drivers are installed correctly. Start a konsole (terminal) session and type (not as root):
Code:

fglrxinfo
and press return and post the result here in this thread.

After that type:
Code:

fgl_glxgears
you should see a spinning cube with glxgears running on each face.

Theoutdoorsman 01-11-2009 10:47 PM

Ok.....thought you abandoned me for a minute there......LOL........ BRB

Here's the results of "fglrxinfo":

display: :93.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (2.0 Mesa 7.0.4)

Here's the results of "fgl_glxgears":

Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
Error: couldn't get fbconfig

Do you mind if I wipe the above post (#7) to trim this thread down a bit? Or do you need to see it?

{BBI}Nexus{BBI} 01-11-2009 11:10 PM

By all means please do trim #7 down :) Your driver is not correctly installed. Type this and post the result here: uname -r

Theoutdoorsman 01-11-2009 11:19 PM

Results of "uname -r":

2.6.27.7-desktop-1mnb

What is this? A foolish question I know...... :-)
