Three OSes - Is it possible?

Can I run Windows XP Pro, SuSE 9.2 and Mandrake 10.1 on one system? Obviously each will have their own partition. When I loaded SuSE 9.2 on a system that was dual booting with Mandrake 10.1 and XP, SuSE seemed to disable the Mandrake install. I would rather think that I chose the wrong options on install.

it's possible to have 3 in one system..........

I have LFS, Slackware, and win 98se one on of my 3 boxes...........win98se boots on it's own........I use a GRUB floppy to boot the other two..........

My current record is 5 OSes at one time. You can have as many OSes installed as you have partitions to install them on.

More, in fact, if you count multiple versions of the same kernel being available for one distro. . .

Seeing as the actual Mandrake install was still on the harddrive, is it a matter of adding it to LILO?

oneandoneis2 05-20-2005 07:37 AM

Yep, that should be all it takes

Where is the LILO config file to be found in SuSE (v9.2)? Would it be in the same place for all Linux distros?

/etc/lilo.conf

Once you edit it, you have to run lilo as root from within Suse to install the new menu to the MBR.

(I personally prefer Grub, as you don't need to do anything after editing the menu, and it can live on a /boot partition that's shared between all distros)

I'll second that.
Aaahhhhggg - I hate GUI installers.
Jongi, for future reference, you might try not installing the loader with your next install,or install to a partition rather than the MBR.
This way you add the new distro to your current working setup. Much more sensible - "principle of least surprise".

syg00: that is exactly what I would want to do: Thanks

Suse 9.2 uses grub by default, unless you specified something else during the install.
I am booting 5 OS's now across two different hard drives. I still have a few partitions left for more!

Always experimentin'! :)
