The old media usb thumb drive has a life span of 2 years...

In the future people are going to have trouble knowing how to access the data......

imho Should switch to microfiche for some things.

That has been talked about before. We have books that are 500 years old. We have king HenryVII's handwriting. But that is only because they were kings, and a library was kept at expense.

Digital data comes and goes unless you have some kind of strategy to save it. And even then, the formats and hardware are outdated in 10 years.

Text may be the best long term backup solution right now.

By the way, fish have a limited lifespan too, that diazo process was only good for 10 years maybe. Silver will start to crumble in 60-70 years. A lot of those early hollywood films are gone. They crumbled in a can before someone could get a copy of them. So, even the backups will have to be backed up.

At least with digital, each generation of copy will be exactly the same.
