Can't install steam-installer on Debian Bullseye
 

I wanted to play Steam games on Linux and installed Wine.
However, I have since found from the tutorial Steam - Debian Wiki that Steam has its own installer.

I have followed the tutorial and at Step 4 'Install steam-installer' - I get the following error message:

Does anyone know why I can't install the steam-installer?
I have main contrib and non-free in /etc/apt/sources-list.

I'm no debian guy, but Have you tried BTW, you should probably have updated to bookworm (Debian 12) instead of Bullseye (Debian 11).

I have already installed Wine on my Debian OS. This opened an application called 'Play on Linux'.
I think this may have ensured the correct repository was activated (multiverse).
I then watched a Youtube video about installing Steam on Linux. I entered the following command and the Steam app was installed successfully:
After opening the Steam app it updated and I logged in with username and password to my Steam account.
I then had to change the settings on the Steam app to allow games to be played on Linux after watching another Youtube video Running Windows games on Linux (1:43).
After this I was able to download the game I'd already purchased from the online Steam website onto my harddrive. This took about over an hour and I don't think there were any errors.

However now when I press 'play' to play the game - the game opens - I press play on the game screen and then it fails.
Does anyone use the Steam app on linux?

Plenty of folks do. Where there are crashes, there are error messages. Post them please. Check dmesg, /var/log/syslog and onscreen.

Once I have opened the Steam app - I then activate the game.
As the game loads an onscreen dialog box appears stating the game will automatically set my graphics settings for the game.
I then press ok - press play on the game's splashscreen - and then the game hangs and returns me to the Steam app screen.

For dmesg the outputs I've looked at are the following:
I am using an AMD cpu with integrated radeon graphics.
I'm not using a discrete graphics card.

Good news.
The game is working properly on the Steam app.

I received a message from the Steam website to refer to the Steam community to resolve my problem.
I wasn't happy with that but I logged into the Steam community for the game and started a thread.
There were a number of replies and one suggested changing the Proton version.

It turns out the Steam app is actually called Proton.
There are a number of upgraded versions of Proton which work with different games in the Steam library.
I had Proton Experimental installed as default.
As recommended by a user in the community - I upgraded to Proton 7 and re-started the Steam app.
The game worked properly after that.

I think this is a Steam issue rather than a Linux issue.
So it's good that the Steam community were able to resolve my problem.
Steam did state I could get a refund within 14 days if all else fails.
