3D Problems...

Right... I'm slowly getting this Linux thing sorted, but have now hit a new problem... I'm running Fedora Core 1, kernel 2.4.22-1.2188 and my 3D performance is pants  I'm running an Athlon XP 1700+ with an ATI Radeon 7500 based 3D card, so am used to some half decent graphics in Windows...

I've searched the board and here are a few bits that may help:

GLXgears:
Code:

299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.800 FPS
343 frames in 5.0 seconds = 68.600 FPS
342 frames in 5.0 seconds = 68.400 FPS
349 frames in 5.0 seconds = 69.800 FPS
383 frames in 5.0 seconds = 76.600 FPS
322 frames in 5.0 seconds = 64.400 FPS

Tuxracer's frame rate seems OK but the shadows don't render correctly. And UT2004 demo is awful... It has random polygons in the centre of the screen, the options screen is unreadable, and the actual game is probably running about 1 fps

It also kick this out on the comand line:
Code:

Xlib:  extension "XiG-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "XiG-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "XiG-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD" missing on display ":0.0".

Any help would be greatly appreciated... I need to prove Linux can do everything Micro$oft can before the other half lets me delete Windows ;)

Cheers,

Tim the noob

This is certainly wierd however the Direct Rendering: Yes indicates that you do have a 3D driver loaded. Probably the wrong driver. Try downloading and installing the ATI radeon fglrx driver (I think its available from their website). You will need the kernel sources to be in /usr/src/linux first. If memory serves then you need to use "rpm -i --force" to install the driver. This is what worked for my brother's Radeon. By the way after installing the Radeon would only work correctly after a reboot.

Im afraid he cant use the fglrx module because the drivers only support Radeon 8500 and higher. Try uninstalling Mesa3D, you can find it in your package database. If that doesnt work, read this:
http://icculus.org/lgfaq
Im not sure if it has anything pertaining to your specific problem, but its a good resource nonetheless :D. Scroll down to the video section.

Could you post the part of your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file that talks about the vid card's driver?
That would be
Code:

Section  "Device"

kosh42 05-25-2004 02:02 PM

What's the -4 about? I just have /etc/X11/XF86Config... Bit's I think are helpful are:

Code:

Section "Module"
Load  "dbe"
Load  "extmod"
Load  "fbdevhw"
Load  "glx"
Load  "record"
Load  "freetype"
Load  "type1"
Load  "dri"

EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Videocard0"
        Driver      "radeon"
        VendorName  "Videocard vendor"
        BoardName  "ATI Radeon 7500"
EndSection

The Mesa 3D driver is the one I think is running...

Cheers for the help,

Tim

PS - Tryed the UT 2003 demo on the off change... Random polygons are even worse :-/
