DHCP RHEL --> Active Directory???
 

Hello Everyone,

I am working at a new company and it's the first time I've administered Red Hat on anything but my own laptop, so you can imagine my excitement when I was given my first project. Problem is, I can't find much out there to research it.

They want to move DHCP FROM their Red Hat servers to Windows Active Directory in order to leverage the benefits of having DNS and DHCP running as part of AD. (This is a mixed shop.) It's my job to research the possible issues that might pop up during and after the migration, not to try to convince them to keep it on RHEL. (In their defense, pretty much everything but AD runs on Linux here and they are moving more and more in that direction...this is just an exception.)

I have searched high and low and all I can find for Red Hat is how to move DHCP FROM Windows and Microsoft basically pretends that linux doesn't exist at all. (Lin-who?) This doesn't seem to be a very common thing to do, so I've taken to trying to post around and see if anyone out there might have more ideas. This is a production environment where all of our desktops run on dhcp, so even a minor issue could be a big problem.

If anyone has done this or can point me towards some resources, I'd be extremely happy!

You cannot move the actual RHEL DHCP server from linux to windows - you have to set up an actual windows DHCP server. But, you can integrate the RHEL DHCP service with an AD network. Linux also has it's own version, so your boss may be better advised to move the windows AD stuff to linux and keep the advantages of the linux server (reliability, security, scalability, price). But it's your ass.

Read through the above - the description of the task you gave dosn't agtually say that you have to have a windows DHCP/DNS service. Integrating the existing RHEL server into the AD framework may be good enough.

not really much to do there - just set up dhcp on windows, and disable it on the linux server.

Thanks guys! I'll have to read through the links, but if just integrating the existing Linux server into AD will give them the benefits they are looking for, I may be able to make a good case for it and save us having to set up DHCP server on one of the Windows boxes.
