PLEB's network buffers

I'm in my University's solar car racing team and we've got a PLEB for communicating between the solar car and the support car (via a wireless bridge). The PLEB is an ARM running linux kernel 2.4 and we're using UDP for our network traffic. The PLEB doesn't have much RAM, so is it possible with UDP that either the send or receive buffer could be filling up and causing the connection to drop out?
If that does happen, how easily does linux recover from the network buffers filling up?
