Why is Mandrake even a distro???

I would like to know why Mandrake is still being developed. It's probably the most cheesy distribution of linux that someone could probably use. Sure it's "easy" for beginners, but whats it matter, you'll still have to get your feet wet with some of the linux commands in console so why not just starter out with a less bloated pos?? Diskdrake is probably the crappiest tool in the World to let handle your partitions. Aside from having the name "Mandrake" they really could do a little better. I would recommend Newbie users of Linux to try RedHat or SuSE.. A little less bloated and just plain offer you more options. Hell, even Caldera is better than Mandrake. Although I have to say that with the Caldera install I did like the built in Tetris game during the package installs. Down with Mandrake!

I have experience programming on Mainframes, PC's and Unix (Sun Solaris and AIX) and I was still leary about trying Linux. I read about different distributions on this forum and other places ended up picking Mandrake because it was 1) easier for a beginner and 2) good at figuring out hardware. It works fine for me.
I wanted a distro that would be useful - computers should be useful. I can read my e-mail, browsing, word processing and spreadsheets mostly. I wanted a distro that could handle compatibility with MS Office. That's been a requirement at every place I have worked as a contractor.
My knowledge of Unix on Sun Solaris and AIX has been less useful than I thought.
I would like to see more people switch to Linux but, frankly, it needs to be even easier than Mandrake.
I am not fond of bloat either but working with tar balls and RPM's with missing libraries is not my idea of fun. I would be happy to buy binary packages that could be installed easily (and uninstalled easily).
I would say Mandrake has been a step in the right direction for most people; we don't know that much about Linux and have to start somewhere.

What's your point?

Mandrake is Linux to the core, or kernel if you please. If you don't like how it installs, or you don't like what it installs (with your permission, by the way), then don't use it. Get another distro, and press on. This thread belongs in some rant section of some forum somewhere, not in a problem solving forum.

Just go away  .

I'm sorry if you only have the brain capacity to use Mandrake..

The distro is as good as the user is. With Mandrake you're not forced to use MDK utilities. You can use them if you wish. Also not every user needs CLI. Most people don't need to compile kernels. Most people don't need, and don't want to, install programs from source. Mandrake is good for such people.
I'll tell you more. I know servers running MDK. And they're stable serves, with long uptime.
Go away...troll.

Hackers

You're some kind of clown that gets off trolling message boards, don't you? I will bet you're about 15, overweight, and permanently hunched over a keyboard even when you're walking around the local mall. If some distro helps someone learn how to use Linux, what the hell does it matter to you? I guess bragging to the girls in study hall about being a hard-core Linux user didn't work and now you are venting your frustration here, right? Pretty macho, I have to admit. Now go the hell away.

acid_kewpie 07-12-2002 05:31 PM

please stop being an offensive moron. Be polite and thoughtful or just don't bother. personally i'd suggest the latter.

I'm quite sure no one on this website cares in the slightest how clever you are.

php 07-12-2002 05:31 PM

lmao funny how many of you whine when someone voices their opinion

bax 07-12-2002 05:48 PM

Even funnier when we actually take offense at you calling people names, insulting their brain capacity, and ALL BECAUSE THEY USE A DISTRO YOU DON'T APPROVE OF. Like I said, you just can't get laid so your'e venting here. Well, time to go cruise another message board and brag about your hacking abilities, right? God forbid you actually go out on a Friday night! It's pretty late in Maine, isn't it? And what are you doing on this Friday night? What a clown as we dumbass Marine grunts say.

php 07-12-2002 05:51 PM
