Universal Distro
 

Hello all ,

I am planning to make a "universal distro". :D

So what do you like to see in the distro ?

-compiling system :
make install or automatic install ?

-default browser :
what is the lighter gui browser existing ?

-default desktop :
what is the lighter desktop existing ? (not gnome or kde : too heavy)

-default gui :
what is the simplest one ?

-installation system :
what is the simplest one ?

-file system :
Reiser ?

-kernel :
Linux or hurd or even simpler ? Self made ?

Do you know where I can start to look at how to make a new distro ?
Should I :
1/ use a big distro and remove what I dont need (Knoppix, PCLinuxOS..)
2/ use a small distro and add what I need ? (CRUX, DamnSmallLinux, LNX-BBC, LFS...)

I am planning to make a forum for that distro. Do you know free forums ?

What happened to there are already too many distros? Try learning how to do a Knoppix remaster first. Or PCLinuxOS.

Do you know what is the lightest distro around ? it can be a good start.
Then I will look at Knoppix...

hmm lightest, maybe something like CRUX.

The universal distro already exists, it's called Windows :)

Lightest distros I know of are DamnSmallLinux and the LNX-BBC thing that came installed on my FSF membership card. . .

I don't know what you mean by universal distro because you will not please everyone with your effort and other people will keep using something else. Opensource is about choice so you are welcome to create a distro to your own liking but please don't refer to it as a "universal distro", there simply is no such thing and it will never exist.

You shouldn't be hurting the Linux community by working on some other distro. you need to put your efforts into working on one of the "top 10" distros instead.

Besides, it would be impossible to build a "universal" distro that would meet everyone's needs. I suspect what you really are aiming at is you just want to build a Gentoo clone and call it your own work.

yes but you know, when Linus started, who would have though he would advance his kernel so much ?
So every project has a start.
I am hoping the linux community will understand me and excuse me my faults.
