Seeking Input for the Next Linux Distro: What Features Would You Like to See?

Hey Linux enthusiasts!

I'm embarking on the exciting journey of designing a Linux distribution for newcomers, and I'm eager to hear your insights and preferences. With the vast array of distros available, each with its own unique offerings, I aim to develop a Linux distro that serves as the ultimate replacement for Windows.

In considering various base distributions like Arch, Debian, or Fedora, I'm particularly inclined towards Fedora for its stability, aesthetically pleasing customized GNOME desktop, gaming-centric features, and its tendency to provide preinstalled drivers, apps, and dependencies right out of the box. Additionally, I'm exploring the possibility of making it systemd-free to ensure lightning-fast boot times.

While I draw inspiration from existing projects like Nobara Linux, which emphasizes gaming-centric features and includes many components out of the box, I believe there's ample opportunity to innovate and provide an even better or cleaner alternative.

Before diving into development, I'm eager to hear from you! What features and functionalities do you envision in the next Linux distro? What aspects of Windows would you like to see replicated or improved upon? Whether it's about desktop environments, package managers, gaming support, system performance, or anything else, your input will be invaluable in shaping the direction of this project.

Let's work together to create the ultimate Linux experience—a seamless and intuitive alternative to Windows that meets the needs and preferences of users worldwide.

Share your ideas, preferences, and suggestions in the comments below, and let's make this vision a reality!

Looking forward to your contributions!

Less is more! Don't have more than one program per job!

Keep it simple & clean.

Preferably, don't use systemd... :D

Take a look at Devuan as your base distro.

Check out Fatdog64 too.... :)

What will you do differently from all the other attempts at doing this?

Arch without systemd is Artix (also Oberon and a few others).

Debian without systemd is Devuan (also AntiX and a few others).

Fedora without systemd is ... well, a sign of someone who needs a lot more experience.

Take a look at this thread: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ro-4175712854/

You don't seem to have got very far in 2 years.

I would say it should go in the reverse order. First you need to have an excellent idea (which is good enough to make a new distro) and you can implement it and distribute it. But why do you want to create a new distro if you have nothing to put into it? Can you really speed up boot? Can you make it really "gaming centric"? Do you really have a unique offer?
Can you manage all those preinsalled drivers and apps?
In most cases there is no need to create a new distro, but an "addon" package.

From the other hand do not try to recreate windows. Windows is not linux and linux is not windows. http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm

A lot of the hundreds of distros, plus hundreds that never got off the ground, all want to be the ultimate replacement for Windows.

For something unique, bottom up, and virtualbox targeted (to avoid chasing a zillion unique device drivers), my personal learning-dream is:

Leverage the minimal init and apps of a distro like 4M/antiX/mll
And .config the absolute minimal kernel for the totally standardized default virtualbox devices!

Then anyone interested could collaborate, because they have the exact same (virtual) PC! Reproducibility Utopia & intense bottom-up learning Heaven!

Comments welcome (other than that I should have the motivation to do it myself LOL).

Instead of a distro how about a script that does the configuration of some existing base distro. Debian, Fedora, Arch, Slackware, or Suse. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel with yet another distro. And for the love of all things sacred the world doesn't need another "based on Ubuntu". There are to many that have no following as it is. Just a waste of bandwidth.

The OP is not interested in creating a distro or doing anything on linux - they are a spammer/timewaster.
Look at their previous posts.

Bro relax that was a college project which i did successfully 2 years ago, now I'm doing it as a hobby for community. I'm not spammer/timewaster lol

Yes that's what I'm aiming for, systemd free fedora with pretty much everything out of box included that fedora doesn't provide inspired by nobara

Yes that's all what I'm aiming to, i was just taking opinions if configuring fedora such a way and contributing to existing project would be good idea or not.
I got answers, thanks.

OK, I'll be convinced when I see your work.
Good luck

What base distro did you end up using for your college project?

Why are you thinking of switching to Fedora?

Fedora is the home of SystemD. Of all the distros to try and remove it from, Fedora is likely to be the hardest, if it's possible at all.

Otherwise, if you like what Nobara does then why not start with that as the base?

Or consider other performance/gaming-focused distros like Garuda (Arch) or Zorin (Debian/Ubuntu).

At the very least, you should check what's on their roadmaps - maybe they have the exact same goals as you, but need help getting there...

hi, we used arch as base for college project.

As far as garuda and zorin goes already created something similar http://masq-os.vercel.app

For systemd free on fedora i agree with you upon some research fedora's everything rely on systemD so it's a pretty bad idea to replace init as for gamers it won't be able run many programs, the thing i see missing in both fedora and nobara is performance optimization they both give the same fps in games, i'm trying kernel optimizations like implementing new rust written scheduler in kernel proven to show 15% performance gains in some documentations.

Already did a debian respin with beautified gnome, live weather conky and dependencies missing to run many apps, snap flatpak AIO app outlet pretty much everything need to be set up on stock debian before daily driver for beginners you can check:
http://masq-os.vercel.app

Fedora fans are more than debian specifically when it comes to gamers for stability and now I'm on way to create more than just beautified respin with distinct performance gains
