Loads of people are going to give you all sorts of ideas, based on their own knowledge, preferences, and experience.
That said, there are also LOADS of distros which can be made 'lightweight' in terms of installed size, un-needed options, and other factors. Why not check on 'distrowatch.com', or on LQ's 'Distro Reviews' on the menu to the right, or on this quite complete list: http://www.linuxbasis.com/distributions.html and decide for yourself what best suits your needs. |
And also check the links in my signature - distro choosers and a comparison chart.

I'd probably look at Xubuntu 6.10. Ease of Ubuntu, with a lightweight GUI. What do you plan to do with this PC? Is it going to have 'Net access? If so, how will it get online(Dial up, NIC card and router/cable modem, etc..). Some Dial up modems are tricky under Linux, no matter what distro.
http://www.xubuntu.com According to the below, you might need to use the Alternate Install CD(basically, its text based, but still pretty easy) http://www.xubuntu.com/get#requirements Although written around Ubuntu, this wiki will work with Xubuntu also... http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Edgy IGF |
