(newbie) distribution to choose...

why are more people choosing slackware than redhat/mandrake/suse/etc..etc...??

KptnKrill 10-05-2003 08:22 AM

umm. I could be wrong but I do think that this belongs in the distribution forum not the lfs forum.

First, read this thread that is the very first "sticky" thread at the top of this forum.... http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=95154

Second, I am moving your thread to Distributions and out of the LFS forum as your question is not LFS specific.

Please place your threads appropiately in the correct forum.

Regards.

What gave you that impression? Red Hat is a great deal more popular than Slackware. So is Mandrake according to most measures.

In my opinion, I think these three are great for most newbies to the linux world. But after awhile and if you like tinkering with linux, then you will be ready to move on to a more non bloated distro, such as Slackware, Debian, Gentoo & others.

Plus you get to learn quite a bit more about the internals of Linux once you switch to a Slackware type distro!

Slackware is probably more popular among computer geeks because it's very "tinker-friendly". I don't think it's too popular for "Joe Average" types who just want something that works without tinkering.

Was that comment necessary? You might intend for it to be a joke but some may find it offensive and I will have to ask you to refrain from posting such comments in the future. Thanks.
