Need help finding what the original Linux distribution that came with my device was
 

Hi all,

For sometime now I have wondered what the original distribution of Linux was that came with the rare UMPC, the UMID mbook M1. Many articles mention Linux being an option but do they not specify which distribution exactly. If someone could help pin down what Linux distribution it was exactly, I would be very grateful.

I found some references of distros crafted towards the M1, if you're just looking to put a distro on it, my opinion is a netinst of non-free sid? ;)

However if you're looking for the exact Hancom Linux that likely was shipped then we'd need a model number... if it is still downloadable somewhere that is? :hattip:

Interesting ! I have only been aware of one custom distribution for the UMID, being this one from a Japanese user https://wikiwiki.jp/knot/Ubuntu%209....r%20mbook%20M1. If you could show the references to other custom ones, I would much appricate it !

As for the Hancom Linux verison, done some digging and it would seem the specific Hancom verison was some "mobile2" (Pictured sticker, from http://ohides.blog82.fc2.com/blog-entry-1718.html). Not sure if it is any different to the regular Hancom Linux since there are no direct mentions to this "mobile" verison anywhere online it seems. I skipped mentioning the actual distro found searching(: UMID M1 MBook Linux,) because it was ubuntu and I don't care for it. Mileage may vary as I did not read too far into: looks like same forums* you found? https://forums.pocketables.com/found...-m1-t5022.html ;)

Ubuntu is built from Debian. Debian, as far as I know won't discontinue support for hardware? I just updated my IBM T20 running sid, IMHO, more works when worked on. I wouldn't dare try something as cutting edge as a touch screen (L:DL) without sid.

Aside from the use of some retro software, you'd have to decide what you want it for? Museum shelf (Hancom,) updated security, games\vids for the kids, office work and so on... up to what it may not do?

My T20 can run many modern lightweight GUIs, if I wanted but instead I play with cutting edge gems like Ruby on TTY. :)

The device has a great screen, as small as it is, I think it would be great for watching movies portablly. The battery has brand new cells so there is no worry about it shutting off half way through one.

Does it have the CPU, GPU and RAM to host an operating system that is able to play back current video formats?
