Has anyone else but me installed Mandrake 7.2
If so did it also take you like 15 hours to get it installed (Full install 2.6 Gb) ????
It seems to be working ok, but it has like a zillion of applications which make it run a bit slow
I would like to hear others oppinion about it

A coworker of mine installed it and it definitely took about two hours for the full install on a fast machine. He downloaded an ISO and burned it, and I've heard that burned CD's can be painfully slow to read from in some CD-ROM's which may or may not have contributed to the slowness of the installation. Just the same though Mandrake is <i>really</i> bloated, but I must say the GUI installation was nice if you're into that kind of thing.

I installed this yesterday, no problems. It only took about 40 mins for the full install, and unlike Redhat 7 I was able to configure X no problem. I thought it was really easy to install and setup. One thing I have noticed is that X uses up all my physical RAM (128Mb) to run, makes things a bit slow!

I tried to install a copy of Mandrake 7.2 from a cd off of a Magazine, but was never able to get past a certain point in the installation.It always crashed.

I have heard it is good for a beginner, but I never had the chance to find out. As for the slow thing I never had any speed problems.

I have installed it twice.The first time there was something wrong with the Mach64 server and I couldn't use X.I down-loaded from another site and this iso worked perfectly? Both versions were binary d/l and the md5sum's were correct.I think I'll stick to Slak :)

I installed Mandrake on my machine at one point at the entire thing (with both cd's) took about 45 minutes (on an Ultra66 controller card). Then I tried it on my girlfriends machine...took hours. After installing an Ultra100 card in her machine it took around 40 minutes..I really think it took advantage of the faster harddrive controller.

im dual booting with win98 and mandrake 7.2 and i must say mandrake is quite sweet......now....how to get my LinkSys LNE100TX ethernet card to work...

I finally managed to get Mandrake 7.2 installed, after about 4 attempts. All 4 times it crashed at different points.

It did take quite a long time to install(about 40 mins), compared to my SUSE distro, but I must say that I am very impressed with it. Apart for the crashes, it was easy to install, and looks easy to use. I think I will stick with this one for the moment!

I installed my Mandrake 7.2 in about 40 minutes. I am doing a dual boot with Windows 2000, I used the Netgear FA310 network cards and have one connected to my network and one to my cable modem. Everything is running Great.

I guess I am going to have to install Mandrake just to check it out. I installed an earlier version (6.X I think) and wasn't very impressed. Haven't tried it since. I keep seeing posts about Hardrake this and Drakconf that. I have never seen either of these and am starting to feel left out ;)

Yea Jemery, I originally installed a 6.? version and didn't really like it either. But there is alot new stuff since the 6.? versions. The Drakconf is real nice GUI for configuring alot of information.

If you don't like Mandrake cause it's to big then you should try Peanut Linux [www.ibiblio.org/peanut]. It's a super small distro; it's only a 50 meg download!

It's a bit outdated though, it still comes with X 3.3.6. I haven't managed to install 4.0.2 yet. Yet!

I had Mandrake before I had Peanut and I think Mandrake is a big unorganizable mess! Peanut is 'clean', or pure, or virgin when you install it so nothing gets on in without me knowing and approving it. That's better than the Mandrake approach, I think.

So if you want to get rid of a lot of useless stuff, go and get Peanut Linux

Actually, I never did get anything other than Mandrake 6.1 onto my AMD? - They all tried, but would not set up the Graphics unless I went Generic.

I get a reliable 13 minute installation from scratch, and this includes fully formatting the HD ( /usr is on the 2GB which is never formatted ( obviously )) but then, I have had plenty of chances to know what to click, and when, because I am always trying different distro's.

The Cyrix has on-board SIS AGP Graphics, whichj also has never given me any luck, and even when I had the Matrox in that, it always tried to setup the SIS, not the matrox, and this got to me ( Yes, I told the BIOS, but it always found the SIS???? )

So, I have had the chance to play with 7.1, and what I say, looked nice - especially drakconf, but only in 640x480x16, so it was useless.

Back to 6.1 for me then, until I get an AGP Card, and then I will try it all again!
No, actually, I think I will sort-of "Borrow" my dad's AMD 950 when he goes on holiday....

I upgraded from 7.1 to 7.2 and it took forever,hours.
But the upgrade didn't work correctly(kde2).
So, I installed it from scratch in a lot less time
and it works fine.

i installed Mandrake 7.2 yseterday on my lab workstation (PII 200) and it took a while but i finally got it. I had to use the text installer because the graphic install kept crashin. Anyhow i like it a lot, i'm very new to linux and the website has easy to follow tutorials.
