How Do I install win32 Codecs

I've downloaded win32 Codecs from

the extension is .mo how can I install it to my Linux.

Thanks a lot but a small query!! Can I use this module in any of the linux distro where it needs or every distro has a separate win32 codecs, kindly reply as Im a newbie.

Those modules are for Slax specifically. You can download a tarball from MPlayer's site that you can unpack on any distro.

Dear All,
I've downloaded these two binary codecs Linux PPC 20061022(292kb), Windows x86 20061022. the first one is only 292kb. I doubt whether it'll be able to detect and play DVD. Anyhow I use windows so its not a problem but I don't like mixing so it is my plea to LQ that u all kindly help me in converting to Linux. If I know fully then I can populate Linux to other 10 persons.

Are you using PPC architecture? Since you're not using Windows, the Windows package isn't of any use to you..

Kindly give the direct link to the File, I even don't know what is PPC (Power PC) what does it mean? I have Intel Via CHipset 1.8 Ghz, 512+128MB RAM, Kindly give the correct codec link which after clicking can directly download codecs. Thanking U.

to the original poster -- this is not to knock you at all, just trying to clear up what may be a misunderstanding on my part... but windows codecs / dlls / whatever will not allow you to play regular DVD's in Linux.

windows codecs are for only the purpose of decoding / playing windows media encoded / created files.

these files include *.wmv, *.wma, *.asf (with wmv encoding), and some others that escape my memory at this time.

if you want to make it all work... do this...

go here... and make sure you get the chinese codecs (why? because the US file cannot contain the 'really good' windows stuff because its all proprietary microsoft copyright -- but the chinese servers don't care and host it anyway -- at least this was the situation when i first heard about the whole thing).

ok that's a zip file.

1) unzip it
2) make a folder inside of /usr/lib ... /usr/lib/codecs
3) make another folder inside of /usr/lib ... /usr/lib/win32
4) dump the CONTENTS of the zip file(not the folder... it'll unzip to a folder full of contents... take the contents out and dump them) into BOTH of those directories. just copy and paste into /usr/lib/codecs and then into /usr/lib/win32.
4a) why? because MOST linux apps will reference /usr/lib/codecs for these windows 32 codecs (or even Mac codecs and other junk) when trying to play media files like audio or video. but some older apps (or even new ones with older specs) like Xine will want to reference the /usr/lib/win32 directory. now you could just symlink from one to the other, but at 230k, the symlink will be almost as big as the damn files themselves...

Ok, now you can play windows media stuff inside of Mplayer or XMMS or Xine or whatever you're using.

Still wanna play DVD's ? Well you're going to need a decryption tool... and a player. Don't sweat it... Xine and Mplayer will both play DVD's (just fool around with the menu when you open them, you'll see an option like "play video from disc" or that jazz).

But when they try to access the DVD disc, they'll be faced with copyright protection -- so you need to get past that (disclaimer: for the legal purpose of viewing DVD's that you own) by using the following...
libdvdcss (RPM module) --> http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br...twork.i386.rpm
libdvdcss-devel (the headers for it) -->

how to install...
1)download those two rpm files
2)from command line, go to the directory where they're at, and do...
# rpm -ivh libdvdcss-1.2.8-2.network.i386.rpm
3)then do...
# rpm -ivh libdvdcss-devel-1.2.8-2.network.i386.rpm
4) you may have to reboot - but i doubt it. you should be able to now play dvd's with a dvd player like xine / mplayer / vlc media player / totem / or whatever else you feel like using that has a "play video disc" option.

Again Confused by other views, but downloaded all the files, having broadband so no prob but there is no uniformity in Linux and everyone shows some different thing, but in windows if u install K-Lite codecs then u can play anything. Nway Thank U all. (Linux should have some thing like this) (Linux will still take some time becoming easy as windows (Just Click & Install)

Linux will never be "just click & install" and never like Windoze.

for everything except wireless ethernet, i've found fedora core 4 and 5 to be the closest thing to "click and install" out there.

and even in windows -- if you downloaded some special codec that allows you to (on its own) play dvd's, then that is a pirate codec. windows dvd player software comes with dvd-decrypting software that is licensed through companies such as PowerDVD, WinDVD, and others. There are only a handful of them.
