Unix training for air force guys.
 

I am in the airforce and stationed in South Korea. I was recently asked to find a cost effective way to have approx 5-7 people trained in basic sysad functions in unix (we use sun solaris 8 for our classified networks).

I've been toying with the idea of hiring an independant contractor to come out and teach a week or so long seminar. Now we must assume that the people learning have minimal experience. This wants to be as indepth as possible however.

Anyone know of anybody that would be interested in doing this? We could arrange a decent financial compensation for the said services. It would end up being a nice vacation to S. Korea all expenses paid.


Anybody have any other suggestions on how to accoplish this task?

Does the Air-Force not have their own internal trainers?

Not really. And besides the training we initially receive is laughable.

Being the air force (huge purchasing power, potentially a large number of students) I would have thought you could contact a proper international training agency and see if they have links with a good trainer in your area. Or, contact say, the LPI and see if they know of LPI training in your area.

being that it comes out of squadron funds and also being that we waste tons of $ on huge plasma screens and state of the art conference rooms, we cant afford to send everyone back to the states for weeks for whatever training we want.

I was thinking of a training company local to you - training one person is expensive, training a whole roomful of people is less so. Good to see that the Air Force has taken on the nuances of businesses - when times are hard buy gadgetry and ignore training :)

I did something similar in my last company (army). We could not get the funding (go army) for a cisco instructor so we pulled all the routers out of our switches and set up a lab. Got a couple of study guides some laptops and trained up 15 people in two weeks.

I am PCS-ing to Korea in August. I would love to do somthing towords obtaining more certs. You should hit up your ed center, as long as if applies to you AF job you should be able to get them to foot the bill.

I also had a group of cable guys pull together and worked out a deal with a local college to get all the linesman certs, all payed by the govt.

Most of these ventures can be done if you sit down and draw up a plan, present it to your commander. How can they say no? You are only trying to better yourself.

I just want the training and certs more then they are willing to give it.

I have been very impressed with RedHat's training, they're the most likely acceptable product for gub'ment use as well.
The courses arent' cheap, but they have decent breaks for groups. Also check through their other providers. The last class I took, 2 other guys paid 20% less through IBM global services(their 'training partner').

Haha Dave... I feel for you! We got the Sun's in our weather shop but no one knows how to use them.

I just teach stuff to the Airmen as they need... Especially with Force Shaping it will be hard to get "professional" training.

I recommend http://www.trainingcamp.net, they do onsites, and have a very nice Solaris curriculum.
