Hi All,

I am greatly suprised by the way Red Hat is forcing students to buy Red Hat printed books prior taking the exams.

I live in Inida and I experienced this annoying Red Hat culture here. People who took RHCE/RHCSA exams outside India could you please share if you also had to buy thier books to book exams??

I wrote to Red Hat and they have ignored it.

Hello,

I decided to take up RHCE exam and approched few of recommended Red Hat partners (http://www.apac.redhat.com/training/india/schedule.php), for my surprise, they all say that I need to pay Rs. 5,000 for the books + Exam Fees to register. Is this really true? Why are they forcing me to buy books? I have bought books from independent authors and done my studying, I really don't need Red Hat books now.

I have lot of respect and love for this company, I like how they support freedom and Open Source. Forcing me to buy something I don't want is contradictory to Red Hat culture, right?

Please let me know how I can simply take the exam.

No, it's not compulsory at all. I don't believe I've ever seen anything from RedHat even suggest it. I note that you've provided literally no evidence for your claims at all, just you complaining about them. Why should we believe you? The courses included printed annotated notes of the course material if that's what you mean... But EVERY course I think I've ever been on I walk away with some poorly bound pile of paper.

It is MASSIVELY naive to think that RedHat are somehow against open source merely by business a commercial business with a product to sell. If they are "forcing" you to buy a book, are they not also "forcing" you to give them money for an RHCSA / RHCE / RHCA certification? Should they just teach you for free, with a complimentary pair of sandals and a pack of joss sticks?

I contacted these http://www.apac.redhat.com/training/india/schedule.php trainig partners and all say that I have to buy the books without which I cannot take the exam. This all evidence I've got.

Assuming that training partners are cheating on us, I reported this to Red Hat (training-in@redhat.com) and it's so unfortunate that they never replied.

I just need to get the attention of the concerned person in Red Hat and I'm not sure how do it.

Oh, I don't want them to teach me. I just need to write the exams, I have read it from independent author's book. If I need to take Microsoft exam or Ubuntu, LPI etc... I just need to pay the exams fees and take up the exam. Nobody forces me to buy books before I could take up the exam.

I've an email from one of the training institute where they say that it mandatory for me to submit a coupon while registing the eaxam and this coupon is in the book which they sell.

Would this be useful? Could any of you help?

I am not very sure about this but as per my knowledge that last page of registration is required to get some discount for the exam as what happened to my case when I was about to take the exam but I couldn't give due to some problems so I am not very sure with that. Have you consulted any red hat certified institute regarding the same?

As per my knowledge the only thing you need to do is pay the exam money and nothing else. Make sure you get in touch with "RED HAT CERTIFIED INSTITUTE" for any queries.

Yes, I have contacted many Authorized Training Centers and all have the same story but they differ in price, few demand 4,500 and others up-to 5,250. If this was from Red Hat prices can't vary.
As I said before I have an email from one of the training center but I'm not sure if it's appropriate to post it here but surely will use it whenever required.

Like you said all are playing with this discount coupon thingy.

Logically it should be like this: If you attend training you will get the material and discount coupon and you could register with some discounts. This sounds better right?

Now, the situation is that they need (mandatory) this discount coupon to get registered for the exam though I don't need training. I will have to pay to buy this discount coupon and I will not get any discount on the exam fees. I have to mention the books what they sell with the discount coupon will not help to pass the exam, it is merely Objectives of the exams and few practice questions

I am not very sure what to comment on that as it sounds very unlogical.Even I am planning to take the RHCE exams in a few months and even I had taken RHEL training long time back and I don't have the books so I don't know about this case if even I will have to purchase the book and as per the exam price is concerned. I think it will vary as per the institute as per the profit they will have in the exam fees.

And I can't comment on this one whether it has become mandatory to get the discount vouchers as I have no idea for the current environment. Last time when i did my RHEL was 3 yrs back when the course fee was around 12000rs for 2 attempts and yes the institute did asked for the vouchers at the back side of book to get some discount price.

Why don't you consult institutes in different states and get updated news on this one.
and you have mentioned "Authorized Training centers" which you see there is a difference from "RED HAT CERTIFIED CENTERS" so are you sure you are looking for info at the right place?

I got the Instiute info from here http://www.apac.redhat.com/training/india/schedule.php. If the insitute is not listed here then they charge you less than 5,250 else it's flat 5,250.

Like you said I'll check this in different states and update the post.

Just hit a search on google for "RED HAT CERTIFIED INSTITUTES" in India and you will get a bunch of options. Just call them individually and clarify your doubts

It sounds like you're looking for "courses" EX200 (RHCSA) and EX300 (RHCE). Where available, they're listed as courses. However, they are just the exam. I do not know if any of the "institutes" you note offer these courses. (The corresponding "rapid track" courses with books and instruction are RH200 and RH300.)

I am not looking for courses. I'm prepared for exams, I just need to take up the exams. I expect to pay the exam fees only whilet I take up the exams.

To be honest this is not the issue with the money, I can afford it.

It is mostly ethical and transparency issue.

As you can see, even though they are listed as 'courses,' they are just the exams.

However, I do not know if these courses are offered in your area.
