Linux Certifications
I am curious of how many people have some kind of Linux certification, what it is, and if it has helped out at all in your career. I am in college going towards an IT degree and I want to start working towards some certificates also. The certificates that I'm looking for is RHCT, RHCE, or Linux+.

Along w/ many Microsoft Certifications I have my CompTIA Linux+ Certification.

I would say your betetr doing a Linux cert over a RHCT/RHCE cert. That way it's not distro cert it's a Linux cert :)

Linux + is a pretty good multiple choice test, but if you really want to get your hands dirty, I'd take RCHT at the very least. I got my RHCT then later my RHCE....you learn a lot about Linux in general from the classes and tests...not just Red Hat's version of Linux.

I past my Linux+ Oct. 15. after attending night collage. My reason for taking the exam was, its the easy way to learn Unix. The place were I work, a lot of the systems are Unix based, and now I'm hacking the Unix servers:-) off limit before. (Hope to take Unix AIX cert soon) I used to be a Microsoft man, but no more, Unix/Linux for me. I would like to think the Cert/Degree have made my work more interesting, and more secure.

Hey guys, I live in london and i wanna do some linux certifications like rhce. But i am not sure how stuffs work. If i have to do a linux certicifation am i supposed to go to any kind of institution and attend classes. Or just sit at home and study myself. I prefer going to colleges than studyin myself. Thanks in advance

I agree it is better to have a Linux cert over RHCE. But I think the RHCE has more behind it because it isn't multiple choice. RHCE starting with RHEL 3 is completely hands on. That is why I went RHCE route, if you have RHCE they know that your not just a book admin, they know you can do the work and you can do it under pressure. My 2 cents.

Microsoft MCSE and CompTIA Linux+ for me :)
Both are helping out in my career considering we have about 75 servers. 2 are Linux, 6 are Novell, and the rest are either NT4/2000/2003 Server. :D |
The LPI Linux Certification IS an official certification of Linux recognized By IBM, Novell, Mandrake, Red Hat, Suse and others... There are 3 level and they are really difficult but if u r an Linux Xperimented user try the exam 100 US$.

Vendor exams like RHCT/E and S/NCLP teach you all about Linux and also how to use thier custom programs. If you pass these exams you WILL know and understand Linux in general not just thier distrobution.
I also believe that the vendor exams are better as they are lab based and not just multiple choice. Proving you can memorise is fine but proving that you can apply your knowledge is SO much better, and is also what employers want to see. I put myself through the RHCT & RHCE courses and it has paid divedends as I am now employed by a major Unix Hardware and Software vendor providing Linux support. Not bad considering I had no IT support and admin knowledge prior to taking the exams. |
