Job prospects after certification...
 

Ok... so if I get my Linux+ what kinda job am I looking at, that this certification will be an asset for?

I got my RHCT and did a quick check on monster.com to see what might be available. One hit in Williamsport, PA. I searched RHCE and it came back with ten hits. When I searched "linux system administrator" it came back with the motherload: 410 hits.

Guess certification has a long way to go before it earns real industry respect.

but wouldnt the certifications be an asset on your resume?

I am thinking along the same track as your h1tman. I would rather be able to say, "I have this, this, and this certification", instead of "I don't have any certifications because I already know it all".

Sounds a little cocky I think. Plus, what's having the certification going to hurt you when you apply for a job? Nothing compared to if someone else gets the job because they have the certification and you don't. Just my 2 cents.

Ok, I'll go along with that. It does feel good to have it, but only the next job hunt will tell if it's useful for sure.

Maybe there's already someone out there who's had experience with this already.

I had a co-worker at Wichita State University who put in over 500 applications accross the country for IT releated jobs on Monster.com. He didn't have any certifications, but he was a 5 year CS/IT graduate and has been using linux for 4 years. He didn't get any returns on those 500 apps.

Granted i think if he had the certs, that it might of increased his chances slighty, mainly because monster.com is a pretty dammed high traffic site. A lot of 16-year olds will claim to be an experts in linux, how do you filter? (EDIT: not to insult anyone on this site, sorry, there are many knowledgable 16-year olds here)

I will repeat something someone said in another thread, they are a small part of a big picture. I think they're neccessary, but they will not get you a job.

Being and admin will involve tons of people skills (stupid users, "I deleted x11, it didn't do anything"), as well as your Linux MacGyver Skills.
