LPI 101 advices.
 

I took the LPI 117-101 exam today, I passed :)

my advice for those who wanna take the exam: Study well then get the Test King and study it very hard, because you will see too many questions in the exam from the test king.

I wanna tell you another thing about the exam:

now there are 90 questions, 65 real questions and 25 dummy questions which will not count in your score!!! the bad news is they will not tell you which question is a dummy one and which is a real one. so you will have to pay the same attention for all questions!

the good news is the exam now is 120 minutes instead of 90 minutes.

Yes it is a shame the those testking pdf are out there, but the extra questions are to counter those situations. Initially there were two versions of the exam, about 120 questions in total for each exam. A leakage at one of the testing partners put some/most of those into the open. This means that you can only memorise the questions and answers and pass the test with flying colors (in theory) By increasing the numebr of items in the test, it becomes less worthwhile to memorise all questions and more worthwhile to learn the actual subjects.

(please note that some of the questions in a testking pdf have the wrong answer or are in the wrong section/exam. It will really pay off to check every answer)

yes, sorry if I was fuzzy in my statement.
Thats the one.

I tried something new when I studied for the 102. I got freemind, a free mindmapping tool for windows and linux and created a mind map with the stated objectives (from the LPI homepage) and I used it as a starting point to document everything I did not already know. worked like a charm.
Still used about 30 hrs to study but it paid off.
In having to write everything down I helped my memory, and when ever I finished a subject I read it aloud to myself to further enhance my recollection.
Of course I used man, apropos and whatis to flesh the mindmap out a bit. And I tried most of the stuff I read about. Never did insmod and patch because I'm to scared to mess up my system .
The next thing will be to learn how to fix a system thats broken.
After that I will try go get a drivers license. Can you believe that I am 37 and dont know how to drive? Embarrasing.

Any books by Ross Brunson ... currently published? any advice?

well, actually this is the only book I know, but I liked it a lot.
You really need to look at the objectives on lpi.org though. Some of the objectives are only touched in the first part of the book, and you need more than a touch.
Use the index at the back of the book and study all of the pages where the subject is written about.

The Branson book is the only recent and updated book there is as far as I know. That should be your only real chioce if you want a book that specifically prepares you for the exam.

I got the exam cram2 book which i found a SLEW of errors. I also used the test king stuff. Then i tookl a boot class camp offered by Novell which was the best of all three, I'm going to try to get this stuff online for people as it was a great guide that even broke down the priority of the questions for each topic in the test. FYI if you take the written test and not the computer test for the LPI you only get the 5 relevant ?'s and it is slightly easier (still very hard)

I think that's a good idea that you trying to get that stuff online for people as a great guide.

It will be very helpful for the people who can't afford lots of money for the LPIC exam..

Yup the Ross Brunson one has mistakes and syntax errors we must have found a dozen while in our bootcamp class. The reason we all used that book is because O'reilly pulled there LPIC book from the shelves due to errors and we were waiting for the revised edition to come out. Hopefully that one will come out soon. as far as the questions, i have lots of slides and etc maybe ai can put something together, remind me later
