mandrake linux 9.1 on presario 2100

hello,
I am linux newbie, trying to install mandrake 9.1 on my laptop presario 2100, AMD 2400+, ATI radeon Mobility U1.
I was able to install mandrake , but on first boot it just hangs. Installer detected most of the hardware devices including the ATI mobility U1 card. I tried to boot using linux-nofb boot option, but it hangs after detecting the PCI ..

Please help.

Thanks

I installed SuSE 8.2 on a Presario 2170 with no real problems. I did disable legacy USB support in the BIOS before installation. All of the hardware was detected and configured, except, of course, the winmodem. I had to work a little to get my Netgear MA401RA wireless card working. See my page at http://pages.sbcglobal.net/zvan.
At the risk of being flamed, I see more problems with RedHat installations than any other. You might try the SuSE 8.2 Live Evaluation version and see how it handles everything.

id, can you find a way to post the error message(s)? That might help us to narrow down the specific problem.

Hello,
I was able to get past the old problem . I had installed xfree86 4.3 with hardware acceleration, which was a bad idea.
But now i am having another problem, during boot up it hangs at "starting pcmcia ". I am not using any PCMCIA cards, but stillit hangs at "starting pcmcia". Any help.

Thanks

Hello,
I was able to boot the mandrake linux, without pcmcia. this is how i disabled it
1) During bootup, Press 'I' to enter in Interactive mode, and DON'T START PCMCIA service
2) After log in , go to MANDRAKE CONTROL CENTER and disable pcmcia service to start from boot up.

Now i can atleast use linux.

Thanks for all the help.

Question how to get pcmcia working in mandrake 9 on 2100 (2175ca) presario

I was wondering if any one was able to actually get the pcmcia working and not just disabling it???? i know it frezzez when booting, right now i just prevent the service "pcmcia" from starting up.

On another note, has any one got the wi fi working that is built in with the 2175us or close modles? it is a 802.11b. thanks

Re: how to get pcmcia working in mandrake 9 on 2100 (2175ca) presario

Hello all,

I am responding to this thread, because I also put Mandrake 9.1 on a Presario 2100 and it hangs while "Starting pcmcia". And I am wondering if the integrated 54g wireless adapter is part of the problem.

Does anyone know if the 54g adapter is internally connected via pcmcia inside the notebook computer? If it is, then getting support for the 54g adapter might fix the pcmcia problem. Is a device driver available for 54g in the Presario 2100?

I have the same notebook(compaq presario 2100), I've installed linux mandrake 9.1 with succees , although the same problem with the pcmcia but disabling it will cure the problem , does anyone had any success with the ACPI to view the battery status????? or has a problem with sound on this notebook???; if you have a presario 2100, an using KDE try to listen to a mp3 and move the window or maximize it or move the bars on the windows and listen if there's a weird sound and the song skips , because I have that problem with this notebook.

PCMCIA problem fix

Hello everybody. Don't know if anyone is still following this thread, but to fix the "PCMCIA hang" issue you have to add the line "exclude irq 10" to your /etc/pcmcia/config.opts file.

At least that worked for me, and I'm using a Presario 2105us laptop.

PCMCIA Problem

I own a compaq presario 1500 and a 2100 and have not tried to install linux on the 2100 yet. I had the same problem with pcmcia on the 1500 and I had to change the memory address range that the pcmcia system addressed. You guys can give this a shot if you would like to.
