I downloaded Slax-live & was impressed with it. I want to try out slackware but i'm a little confused about how to go about it. Can i mix & match packages from Slackware 9.1 & Slackware-Current?
Basically I want to install Slackware with the latest 2.4.x kernel & the latest apps & KDE (3.2.1) but I require XFree86 4.3 since ATI fgrlx drivers don't support XFree86 4.4.
Should i get the Slackware 9.1 Isos, not install KDE at all & use swaret to update Kde or use the packages from f tp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.2.1/contrib/Slackware/9.1/
Alternately I can get the Slackware Current from a mirror but how would i replace XFree86 4.4 ? Will there be dependency problems with Kde 3.2.1 ?
I dont have a floppy drive on the system so If I go down the Slackware Current route which sets should i put on a bootable Iso ? (Out of A AP D DES E F GTK K KDE N T TCL U X XAP XD XV Y)
If i go with Slackware 9.1 & update later which Iso's should I download ?
Here's what I did:
I downloaded only the first Slackware 9.1 and used that to install. Then I downloaded and installed SWareT, which I then used to update my system to current. If you want everything to be the latest stuff then current is the way to go. To prevent SWareT from updating XFree86 however, add xfree to an EXLUDE line in /etc/swaret.conf (good file to look at anyways. Has a lot of hints on how SWareT works). Then install KDE using SWareT.
You should probably use Slackware 9.1 then upgrade to current with swaret. And add XFree86 to swarets' exclude list so it doesn't get upgraded. There shouldn't be any dependency problem with KDE 3.2.1.
The first CD contains most of Slackwares packages. The second is KDE and GNOME. The third and forth are just sources. So all you need is the first and second really. Or, if your comfortable with the command line you could just use the first CD, and then download KDE.
I am new to slackware too, so can someone tell me what is the difference between slackware 9.1 and the current version in terms of performance? Is there a real difference?
Thanks
Slackware 9.1 is the latest official release, and slackware-current could be called something like pre 9.2(or 10, perhaps?)
So if you want the latest and greatest, go for -current.
I don't think performance differs much..

The KDE 3.2.1 packages from slackware are compiled against XFree 4.4 as far as i know
(I couldn't get them working without Xfree 4.4). However, there are other slackwarepackages available which do work whit Xfree 4.3

Just my , but The fglrx drivers from ATI are pretty bad. I use Xfree 4.4 which comes whit 3D acceleration for radeon-cards by default. They are not as fast as the ATI drivers, but are MUCH better at 2D stuff, and more stable too.
Well if this help i have install slack 9.1 i upgrade kde 3.1.4 first to kde 3.1.5 later to kde 3.2.1 not whit swaret, i do it manually. i use swaret for search for some current package and install then under slack 9.1 i have mix booths packages from current whit 9.1 they work fine, and the one that have give me trouble is cause they search for others paths which you could fixed out whit less problem.

Actually come to think of it when I reformated i tried to use KDE 3.2.1 with XFree86 4.3, and startx/startkde complained about not having the Xinerama libs (I don't use xinerama btw). But 4.4 fixed the problem.
not to get too far off what this thread was about but i upgraded kde 3.1.4 to 3.2.1 using the tgz files i downloaded from kde.org. i am using xfree 4.3 and have not had that problem (xinerama) on slackware. i have seen it on other distros though. this probably has to do with what kind of hardware you have in your computer.

I personally like KDE3.1 more, mostly because of KDM. The newer one is less friendly. Now I have to create a script if I want to use XFCE4, then remove the script if I don't want to use it anymore. Also, KDE3.1's control center is more friendly for editing KDM than KDE3.2
