how hard can it be for chickens sake!!!

debian, woody, stable.

i downloaded mysql 4 and apache 2, installed mysql4 and compiled apache2 and installed, works very fine...

BUT how in my little potatos name do i get apache2 and mysql running at boot time, autostart.

I tried like for 2 hours now to get mysql start coz mysql comes with mysql.server init file, but still no go.

Please explain this to me, thanx for any advice!

I don't use debian, so I can't give a complete answer, but somewhere on your system, there will be a bunch of startup scripts that define different runlevels (in slackware, the files are in /etc/rc.d). Add the commands you want to the runlevel 5 script, then make sure the default runlevel is set to 5. (If you want, you could replace the 5 with a 3 or 4). The programs should then start on boot

Are you using woody for any particular reason? If you want more modern software, you can use unstable (sid), at the expense of occasional breakage (though still amazingly stable).

installing software

You have Debian, and for your good, you should only install debian software. Therefore, no more source install.

For new and recent software, you must change you /etc/apt/sources.list file and insert the testing, or unstable mirror, and install the software from them, throw apt.

for instance, to install apache2, add "deb http://ftp.ua.pt/debian testing main" and "deb-src http://ftp://ftp.ua.pt/debian testing main".

then run apt-get update && apt-get install apache2 and mysql and other.

Then, coment both the lines. and run apt-get update.

It's imperative that you only use debian's reporitories packages in way too maintain your debian installation stable and optimized.

sorry for my rusty english.

If you have more doubts, be free to mail me: gass (at) otiliamatos (dot) ath (dot) cx.

the mailserver is currently down, it will be up after 19th january.

look into /etc/init.d/ , see if there is a file called apache.
If yes, then look into /etc/inittab to check which runlevel you are on.
Next, create a symbolic link in /etc/rc?.d/ named S**apache to /etc/init.d/apache.
(?=runlevel, *=index number)
In my case, it is /etc/rc5.d/S91apache

Ack, don't manually mess with symlinks, use update-rc.d if you want to adjust your init scripts for a runlevel.
