Epson C64 will not print

I just got an Epson C64 printer and I am trying to set it up on Redhat 9. I downloaded the latest version of gimp-print that includes the driver for C64 and compiled it --with-cups. I used CUPS web based administration panel to add the printer. The printer is connected by USB cable and is detected fine by the system. I go through, select the C64 driver and click add. Then I restart CUPS.

When I try and print using like Kwrite it seems to be sending it to the printer fine but nothing appears in the queue and and the printer just sits idle.

When I reload the KDE print manager under description for my printer it says either "Media Tray Empty!!" or "gimp print no pages found!!". I take this to mean that there is no paper in the printer, but actually there is. I hit the button on the printer that continues the job (the one that you press if you run out of paper in the middle of a job, load more and want it to continue) and after pressing it the printer runs a blank sheet through and the error message is still there. (it runs a blank sheet through anytime you press it, even if you havn't tried sending it a job)

I have looked a lot at linuxprinting.org. The C64 is rated to work most of the time, and is listed under supported printers.

If anyone has any ideas on how to make this work please help me.

Thanks in advance,
E-Oreo

-- Probally not relevent but I tried it anyway:
In the Print dialog box on Kwrite if I choose to print using Generic LPD unix print system the file appears in the queue but still nothing prints.

Unhappy

I spent a good couple of hours bashing away at the same problem today, i.e. a C64 with Red Hat 9.

Please excuse me whilst I ask a couple of questions:

- What build of gimp-print are you using? 4.2.26-rc2, 4.3.25 or something else?
- Did you configure it manually (i.e. CUPS in text files) or in redhat-printer-config? I realise that you did some stuff in your web browser.
- Did you get a full list of Epson Printers in the CUPS printer configuration, or just the option of "Epson Stylus printers" and "New Epson Stylus printers"?

I was using the former gimp-print version and couldn't get it to compile: there was something wrong with foomatic I also tried CUPS, but could not find a complete list of printers? To get it to compile, I had to use the --without-foomatic option when configuring gimp-print...

I have to say, it can get most irritating sometimes! Sombody please help!

Cheers,

coolvid.

I am using gimp-print 4.3.21. I have tried to configure it manually, I have tried configuring it using RH print manager, and I'v tried configuring using the web based CUPS manager. I'v even tried configuring it in RH print manager and then editing the files to change certain things.

I could not get gimp-print 4.3.21 to compile with foomatic either. I had to ues the --without-foomatic option in configure. I downloaded the two foomatic files and put them in my path but it still does not work. I configured gimp-print --with-cups though, in hope that maybe it would work.

The C64 driver is not included in older versions of gimp-print. You need 4.3.21 or 4.2.6-pre2. After installing gimp-print it was weird. The new drivers (including the C64 one) showed up in the webbased cups thing but NOT in the RH print manager.

I did the following things to configure it in the web based CUPS manager:

Step 1)
I set name, location and description

Step 2)
I selected "USB Printer 1 (Epson Stylus C64)"

Step 3)
I selected "Epson"

Step 4)
I selected "Epson Stylus C64 ....."

Looks like everything should work, restart CUPS but it still does not work The only weird thing about that was that it set the device to something like "usb://Epson%20Stylus.....". Since this didn't look right and didn't work I tried changing the config to file so that the device was "/dev/usb/fd0". still didn't work. I also tried many many other combinations like that ("usb:/fd0","usb:/dev/fd0", etc.) but none worked.

I just tried the same operation using SuSE 8.2, and the results were interesting. On one machine, my development machine, everything compiled OK - but on a customer's machine I couldn't get it to compile with foomatic support. I am wondering if I need to install some development libraries in order to get foomatic support to compile...

In the former case I too had to manually copy escp2-Stylus_C64.ppd.gz (or similar) to a sensible directory, but in the latter case these were not compiled, as I expected.

I had the same results with both 4.3.25 and 4.2.26-pre2.

Cheers,

cv

Got it working

First you need to download Gimp-Print 5.0.0-alpha1, GP 4.2.6 also contained a C64 driver but it doesn't work (or didn't for me at least). Now when you run configure use the --without-foomatic option and it should compile fine. Now restart CUPS and use their web based printer manager and you should be able to install it and make it work.
