Should I go for gentoo?

Hello,

First, my profile. I wish to do some web development (client side, doing raw html + css + javascript + svg), possibly some c++ development if an itch needing scratching should come by. I'm not very well versed in bash, but know my way around. I like to tinker. I like to be in control.

In the past I've been a gentoo user (we're talking 2011 when I stop using Linux altogether). I wandered from distribution to distribution. Tried slackware, red hat, suse, debian... at the time when I found gentoo (that's 2007, I think) I was kind of desperate and found gentoo to be a perfect fit. However, in 2011 I stopped using gentoo, because of a new laptop and I needed to dedicate time to my actual life.

Now I have tried various Linux distributions and settled on Solus as every other distribution is lacking in at least some aspect. Solus ticks almost all of the boxes... except for package manager, that package manager doesn't understand how to deal with leftovers of uninstalled programs, which is very annoying to me. Also systemd isn't my cup of tea. But, oh well, the system seems to function just fine. However, I'd feel a little more secure without it.

Now, my skills with gentoo have become rusty, but it certainly is attractive to have a box running gentoo. I'll find my way around. There are fond memories about portage.

Still, I find myself indecisive. Primarily because of fear of having to configure the kernel and sensors.

Currently I also am concerned about hardware accelerated graphics. I have an Radeonhd 6650M and it appears it's not officially supported, but on solus the hardware acceleration seems to run just fine.

I used Sabayon before I finally switched to Gentoo.
At the time I was unaware of Redcore or Calculate. Might have to load them into a VM and give them a run.

So you don't like Sabayon. I had no issues with 10+yr old hardware until nVidia decided not to support my aged video card.
Still not the Distros fault. As with all of these types of distros they have to account for everything, so yes, it's going to be bloated.
