'Failed to $1' error during installation

Hi,
I am trying to install gentoo onto my desktop. I've downloaded x86 minimal install cd and verified its integrity. When I boot and choose 'gentoo', it comes till choosing keyboard and the tries to mount devices and gives the following error.
Code:

>> Mounting squashfs filesystem
mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on /newroot/mnt/livecd failed: Invalid argument
!! Failed to $1; failing back to the shell...
...
/bin/ash: can't access tty; job control turned off

I'm put in to shell after this.

Did 'dmesg | tail' and found the following lines interesting.
Code:

EXT4-fs: Update your userspace programs to mount using ext4
EXT4-fs: ext4dev backwards compatibility will go away by 2.6.31
...
SQUASHFS error: Major/Minor mismatch, older Squashfs 3.1 filesystems are unsupported

I'm not able to make out anything. Any ideas...

I haven't use the Gentoo livecds for ages, maybe you have hit some strange bug.

You can use virtually any livecd that you like. Just boot on command line mode, of if in X, launch an xterm and follow the handbook just like how you would do with the Gentoo livecd. It's the same, the livecd that you use makes no difference.

Are you sure that EXT4 is supported with the Gentoo minimal CD ?

Did you try SystemRescueCD LiveCD ?

No, I don't know if ext4 is supported in minimal cd. I never intended to use ext4.

Well, one of the good guys pointed me to Gentoo HOWTO on alternate installation methods and I used Debian to boot and proceed with installation :) Right now, am installing X :)

It could be a bug as you suspect or something else. Would have been nice if we could confirm. Otherwise, technically, this thread is closed.

Thanks guys...

Same Probs

I am having the exact same results, with the x86 2009.0 Gentoo LiveCD (install-x86-minimal-20090602.iso).

The boot goes fine until it starts mounting filesystems, and then dies.

mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on /newroot/mnt/livecd failed: Invalid Argument
!! Failed to $1: falling back to the shell...

I opted to simply install via a different livecd, but figured I would add to this thread and let ya know that you aren't the only one that had this problem.

This problem doesn't really bother me, as I already took another route, but if anyone else is having this problem, and needs any more info out of me, I'd be happy to add whatever I can.

walkeran,

Please post a bug at bugs.gentoo.org if one does not exist.
That way, this will get fixed and those that come after you will benefit.

walkeran 06-06-2009 08:28 PM

I went and checked, and it had already been entered. I don't know why I didn't think of looking there at all, but thanks!

Double check with the SystemRescueCD, you have a good chance that you will be able to install Gentoo with that LiveCD.

Thanks guys, even the GUI is up and am posting from it. Even walkeran seems to have got gentoo installed. Now that it is confirmed that the problem was indeed a bug, we will leave it to gentoo devs to fix it for future users.

Btw, don't mistake me for marketing, but if anybody wants quick, realtime support, do make a habit to visit gentoo irc channel #gentoo on irc.freenode.net :)

Thanks again.

P.S: I'm not finding Solved/Close button in Thread tools to close it. Mods may close this thread.
