There's plenty of craziness on both sides of the argument about gun ownership but ultimately it's the owners and not the guns we need be worried about and environment plays a huge role. In an Urban environment there are only very specialized uses for guns... perhaps we might agree that Brinks truck drivers are one example of legitimate use.

In a rural setting, guns are tools and often very useful ones. I have lived where wild animals can indeed be a serious threat and others more suitably classed as varmints or pests need to be controlled and guns are one effective way of doing so. Also, it has been my experience that children brought up around guns are far more respectful and responsible than even urban adults who never got serious training especially on a routine basis. I never feared my neighbors' kids but I did fear office workers who traveled to Colorado for hunting season with firearms and a case of fire-water.

I doubt anyone would argue for the right to possess a fusion nuclear device, even unarmed because there is just no conceivable reason for an individual to own one and 'what if something goes wrong...an accident, or in case of dementia"....whatever any value is far outweighed by risk. I think similarly the risk of problems with assault weaponry far outweighs any conceivable value so they deserve extreme scrutiny if not outright banning for personal property. It is a complex issue but I don't see why logical argument can't prevail excepting the complete lack of understanding of environments other than the one "you" live in seems to halt meaningful discussion. I don't imagine a solution anytime soon as long as such close-minded polarization exists.
