Scrambled screen on boot
 

I'm on a very fast computer using fc3. This fc3 install has been working perfectly for about a month until just now. Instead of loading the gui login screen on boot, I just get a scrambled screen. It was running perfectly and i just got it the way i wanted it. So what could have possibly caused this?

What do you mean "a scramble screen" ???

I don't know whant you mean. So, I suppose that you got a console
login screen instead of a GUI ones.
If so, try to log in as root, run Xconfig to choose reconfigure the X windows.
If these cannot help you, please show me more details.

It boots the kernel then immediately does that.

My computer with all my important stuff doesn't boot up anymore, could someone try and help?

Can you get the terminal up? Are you using a monitor? Hae you recently modified xorg.conf?

I'm using a monitor. Yes, xorg was updated in several ways yesterday with a yum update. I'll see about getting a terminal up. This is my first serious problem so i'm going to have to go look up how to do that.

When you start to boot up do you see the boot loader at all? if so you need to edit the boot parameters and add a 3 to the line. This will boot you into runlevel 3 which equivalent to the dos command prompt. This doesn't require the X-Window system and therefore if it works the problem is probably in xorg.conf. Do as suggested above to reconfigure and the xorg.conf file should be fixed.

Yes, the boot up is normal except instead of the gui login screen I get scrambled colors. So, I don't even go to the gui login, I just go to a command prompt and edit xorg.conf in that. I hope it works

Yeah it sounds like xorg.conf has been messed up
maybe your resolution is set to an illegal combination or do you use nvidia or ati drivers? if your kernel was updated you probably need to recompile them. not sure about ati but definitely for nvidia

Yes sure. But how exactly do i boot into runlevel 3 using grub? Where is the 3 added?

ok so you press any key to stop the timer. highlight the kernel you are using, press e.
you should now have three lines, highlight the middle (longest) one and press e.
you should now be able to add or delete from this line. all you need to do is type a 3 and then press enter and then b to boot

I get scrambled screen with that. I added a 3 to the end of "quiet" so it was "quiet3". Try different runlevel?

you need a space between them
