Resolution problem with KVM switch
I have an ATEN (CS1944DP) KVMP Switch with following setup:
Port 1: DELL XPS laptop with Fedora 39 Port 2: ASRock (A300M-STX) with fedora 39 Port 3: Beelink (GTR5) with Windows 11 Pro Port 4: Intel NUC (NUC7i7BNB) with Ubuntu 23.10 When switching between the computer the Fedora computers can't keep the resolution. I have res 2560x1440 before I switch and when switching back I get res 1024x768. Then I have to reboot the Fedora computer to get back the res 2560x1440. The other computers keep the resolution fine ... only Fedora can't make it. I have switched the CS1944DP cables so it is not a KVMP problem. As I understand the res problem is related to Fedora. All help is appreciated ... |
Fedora defaults to Gnome Wayland session. If that's what you accepted/installed, try both running a different DE, and running in Xorg/X11 instead of Gnome on Wayland. You may need to try LightDM or SDDM instead of GDM, or the reverse. If already running an Xorg/X11 session, try switching to Wayland. The login screen should have an icon to click to select other session options than the default. Installing another DE or WM maybe be required first. Does the errant behavior persist when you switch?
What is input/output from inxi -GSaz run from each Fedora? Have you done any manual display configuration from your DEs in your Fedoras? They should be able to run 2560x1440 without any effort on your part to cause it - automagically - like Ubuntu. Which X session type and DE or WM are you using in Ubuntu? If either of your Fedoras are equipped with Dual/Hybrid graphics, they may be lacking special driver configuration via Prime or Bumblebee or similar optional software to operate correctly in a KVM environment. Fedora is not bleeding edge WRT Xorg/X11. Most other distros its age are using a newer version that suffers less trouble with KVM environments. A switch might be appropriate, maybe to Mageia or openSUSE or another rpm-based or non-Debian-based distro besides Ubuntu. If KDE/Plasma is your Fedora selection, then you might consider Neon as a substitute. |
I run the default setup both for Fedora and Ubuntu and have not made any display configuration ... that is Gnome & Waylands.
inxi -GSaz port 2 Fedora gives: Quote:

Please edit your post to replace your instances of [quote] [/quote] with [code] [/code] so that they can be properly read as you saw the output on your screen. This explains.

Since both Fedora and Ubuntu use Wayland I don't see why I should test Xorg/X11.
Ubuntu can handle the switch back resolution with Wayland but not Fedora. Why Fedora goes to 1024x768 after a switchback is a mystery to me ... is it a bug? It can't be related to GPU drivers since the problem occurs both with DELL XPS laptop and ASRock (A300M-STX) both with Fedora 39. |
Inxi isn't signaling possible GL problems here:
Code:
# inxi -GSaz --vs --zl --hostname Code:
# inxi -GSaz --vs --zl --hostname Code:
# rpm -qa | egrep 'mesa|xorg|linux|gpu|yland|egl' | sort Code:
# rpm -qa | egrep 'mesa|xorg|linux|gpu|yland|egl' | sort |
I gave the same command in my system (port 2).
Code:
$ inxi -GSaz --vs --zl --hostname Code:
$ rpm -qa | egrep 'mesa|xorg|linux|gpu|yland|egl' | sort What does 'API: EGL Message: EGL data requires eglinfo. Check --recommends' mean at the end? |
I installed KDE Plasma and after reboot I choose KDE Plasma Wayland.
Switching back and forth kept the resolution as it should ... works OK. So it is working with KDE Plasma Wayland but not with Gnome Wayland. At least I have isolated the source. How to proceed is beyond my level ... help appreciated. |

It looks like you need to attract attention from Wayland/GDM/Gnome experts. I am and use none of those three. |
