FC2 updated kernels not loading
 

I am running Fedora Core 2 and using up2date to download and install new kernels. I have not installed a kernel manually yet but I would like to try soon and then maybe this problem will not be an issue.

The problem is, when I boot to one of the kernels up2date has downloaded and installed it hangs on the "Probing for new hardware" section. The only kernel I can boot to correctly is the one that came installed with my system.

Do I have to change something to allow booting to my other kernels correctly?

The behaviour you describe is unusual. I've never had a problem, but I use apt-get and yum to update packages, never up2date.
You could try running "yum update" in a terminal window to see what it says - it may detect a broken package.

I'm actually having the exact same problem. I did a clean install of fedora and after it finished, I ran "yum update". When I try to boot into the new kernel it installed, it freezes at "Probing for new hardware". If needed I can post all the specs on my system.

I've also got a Highpoint Rocket PCI card in there which allows me to connect more IDE devices. That's the only reason I can fit 3 hard drives and two optical drives.

The thing we have in common seems to be the Creative sound card, but that doesn't even seem to be the same since mine's an Audigy 2 and tutwabee's is an Audigy.

Any ideas? Like tutwabee mentioned, I can still boot to the original kernel, but not the updated one.

It looks like the only thing doucer and I have in common is an Audigy 2 sound card and I used to have a Lite-On drivebut replaced it with my DVD burner. My DVD and CD burners will no longer burn in Fedora (I think because I turned off kudzu) so this problem will most likely fix another I am having.

My question now is, should I turn on kudzu and see if it magically loads with the new kernels now (or should I wait and hope my burners start working again? I can't revert back to my old kernel because I deleted it out of grub :(

I have a suspicion that the problem is the Audigy card because my friend with an audigy 2 platinum is having the same problem yet his mother without an audigy is not having this problem.

I would, as you mentioned, turn Kudzu on and see what happens.
Did you only remove the entry from grub, or did you delete that kernel from /boot?

I only deleted the entry from grub, but I don't know what the original kernel version was so I am not sure what I should add back in. I guess I should have just commented it out.

I just added the lines for my original kernel back into grub.conf and set kudzu to start on system boot. My system is back to normal (my burners work) except now I need to know how I can manually update my kernel and get it working properly since I can no longer use yum to do it successfully.

Where should I get new kernels and should they be Fedora Linux kernels or just any old linux kernel?

I wish I could shed some light, here. I don't know why kudzu
would be hanging, on your specific setup.

To grab a new kernel you could download the rpm manually.
Just surf to the locations within the repository listed in your
yum.conf, and grab the kernel. Then install it with rpm.

Yeah, neither of us seem to have strange hardware configurations by any means. So that's why I'm so curious as to why it won't boot. The only thing we have in common is our sound cards. Could that really be it?

I'm having the exact same problem!

One hour ago I ran up2date, updating only my kernel. A new entry appeared in Grub, but it won't boot from it... :( Same problems as you lot: Probing for hardware...

When I press ALT+CTRL+F1, I see that there some problems with the swap partition... :confused: :confused: :confused:

Yeah, I can check that. What's it do and when should I press it? (I'm still quite a newbie).

You should press it while it is probing for new hardware (thus while booting)
