startX 'command not found' ?
Hello
I finally managed to get hold of Sarge testing ( 13 cd's) and decided to migrate from MDX 10 . I did an expert26 install and everything seemed to go really fine. Until I typed in startx at my user prompt here i got 'commad not found' I went back and checked if KDE was installed as well as X11( using apptitude ) and it appears in 'installed packages' Even though I dont get a description for it? Is there something I have missed ( probably) I have had a long look at documentation but cant find any thing that concerns my problem, probably because it must be relatively stupid. |
try typing /usr/X11R6/bin/startx
and try searching... http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/215372 |
Thanks
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx doesnt do it I will go over the above mentioned thread |
none of the mentioned sollutions to locate startx worked for me
I had a look in /user/X11R6/bin and the only thing in there is xfs. I have tried to locate startx using locate grep finger but it all comes up with zilch I looks to me like xfree is not installed ?? |
# apt-get install x-window-system
|
thanks.
I am now getting an unmet dependencies message with this command I will try and install these first .. I am quite stuck here when I go back to base-config and reselect the necessary packages and try to install them I get the message 0 updated 0 installed etc etc which means that they are installed no ? |
Are you connected to the internet? Please put your /etc/apt/sources.list here. Also:
#apt-get update #apt-get install x-windows-system That might work |
Hi
Is it apt-get install x-windows-system or apt-get install x-window-system I get an answer with apt-get install x-window-system I get a long message which basically says that it depends on x-window-system-core but its not going to be installed because of unmet dependencies ( 9 of them) the debian machine is not connected yet to the Internet but i can read the sources.list i using VI It just lists the cd's ( 3 to 13 ) which were scaned at the begining of the install (( cd 2 is not in there ?) thats it |
need cds
you will ned the 'testing' cd's, there should be an "apt-cdrom" entry at the bottom of your sources.list. If there isn't use the command "apt-cdrom" to add your cds to the list.
If that still doesn't work, you may need to connect to the internet manually (the command to bring up the network is usually "ifconfig" followed by parameters, see "man ifconfig") |
hi
I did this at install I scanned all the cds whilst in base-config I will try again this way but if this doesnt work i rekon the CD's are not ok which surprises me . this proceedure loads OFFICIAL SNAPSHOT i386 BINARY - ( numbered 2 till 13 thats the amount of cd's I have) is this ok ? |
Ok I rescaned all the cd's
went back to base-config and selected the debian task installer here I selected just desktop environment and X windows system It did ask for the CD's again .. this apparently installed a bunch of stuff as it was busy for a while with a lot of screen output and i could see kde apps flying by but im still at square one as when I type in STARTX i get the same error message |
Hi Phil,
I'm just a newbie, but I had the same problem with woody two weeks ago. If you scan the update cd with the rest of the other cds, for some reason it does NOT work. I reinstalled using only the regular cds, and it found x that time. Hope this helps. Best to you. |
HI
Thanks for the info . I just have the 13 CD 's with the binary images these were downloaded by the person who lent me the set. He has managed to set up his system no probem . Unfortunately I only have an IDSN connection so downloading a distrib is out of the question  This is really strange because I run through the proceedure correctly in base-config . So everything should be set up  I have this CD set until monday so I have to figure it out by then or its back to MDK10  |
Quote:
#apt-get remove xfree86-common and then re-installing it #apt-get install x-window-system |
Hi
thanks for your answer Im afraid that I have put this aside for now I have to give the CD's back today and I need a working machine to work on so I have put back MDK10 on the PC . I will get back on this later as I am planning to set up a new PC on whiich I can just try out stuff.  BTW I did try that but to no avail, this set up was running me around in circles I went quite far into the nitty gritty but I always came back to the same problem I tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 last but this didnt work It could be that my card was not recognised ( matrox450) because I ran through the instalation several times and it asked me for a bunch of CD's I saw the screen output installing the x server as well as KDE but then nothing happened at the STARTX prompt I dont know so .... .. THANKS AGAIN EVERYBODY FOR TRYING TO GET ME UP ON THIS :) :) :) :) |
