Libreoffice writer not working in Debian9 + LXDE/Mate

I recently updated Debian8 to 9 and it is otherwise working very well. I had KDE installed but I also installed LXDE with task-lxde-desktop and that is also working very well. Similarly, I also have Mate desktop installed.

I also have Libreoffice installed and I use it for spreadsheets and documents.

Libreoffice works very well in KDE. However, in LXDE and Mate, I have following problem:

The spreadsheets are being opened very well with Libreoffice calc. But, .doc files are not opening. I have also tried from command line with following commands:

libreoffice mydoc.doc

it starts and Libreoffice5 banner shows. However, it just closes without any message on the terminal (as if exiting normally).

If I give only command

libreoffice

it starts and displays office screen. I can then open a new spreadsheet, presentation, math, draw or database. But if I click 'Writer document' to open a new document, it just closes (without any error message on terminal).

Where is the problem and how can this be solved? Thanks for your help.

Exit OpenOffice and check to see that there isn't some stray OpenOffice process left running in the background, perhaps as a dependency of a KDE menu, or reboot to kill any such process.

I've just tried and had no problems opening both doc and docx files from inside Writer. I also tried a doc file from the command line and it opened. This is in lxde.

Try reinstalling LibreOffice.

I tested again. In my system with multiple desktops installed, the command 'lowriter' exits without any message in LXDE, Mate and Xfce. It works all right in KDE Plasma. In Openbox, it gives following error, which may indicate the problem:

What does this message mean?

Good news! It has started working normally after removing 'libreoffice-gtk2' which was installed on my system. The icons etc are looking all right.
