Is "kernel-image-x_i386.deb or i586.deb the right image for P4 processor?
 
I've selected Processor type P4 under make xconfig, but the final image after compiling is

kernel-image-2.6.5.040406_1.0_i386.deb

Should it be kernel-image-2.6.5.040406_1.0_i586.deb instead?

no. i386 is the type of achitecture.
