DSL won't find the filesystem of KNOPPIX
My computer has an Intel processor, a 930GB SATA hard disk, Windows Vista, and an Intel ICH8R SATA RAID controller.
Damn Small Linux won't work on my PC when I boot it off a LiveCD. It boots fine until it states - 'Cannot find KNOPPIX filesystem, sorry. Dropping you to a (very limited) shell.' I think these problems might be related to the RAID controller. Can someone please help me? Zeeky |
Please can someone reply to this? I really need help with this...

No guarantees this will work, but...
At the boot prompt, try using the following "cheat code": Code:
dsl sata Here's the DSL wiki page listing all the boot "cheat codes": http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/i...hp/Cheat_Codes |
Thanks, but I have tried 'dsl sata', and all that happens is that it says 'Loading sata_0(something' and then crashes. I'll look at the other cheat codes on the website, though.
Thanks, Zeeky |
This happens to me too, i have done everything it says in the right ordor and way but it says cannot find filesystem KNOPPIX.. and then gives me a bunch of codes that dont do anything,, anyone know what to do

DSL magi is here-
check your append line and the folder name- are you using CD or USB? The append line should be-"knoppix_dir=knoppix KNOPPIX_DIR=KNOPPIX BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix" Or "knoppix_dir=DSL KNOPPIX_DIR=DSL BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix" also-there can be other reasons-USB = "dsl waitusb" Give me some more info and check out my DSL-Qemu-Persistent USB Remaster below- You can save your settings/apps/etc into the qemu HD's just like the real DSL and you can invoke it from within the DSL live environment...post ( http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...indows-719934/ ) |

Got the same problem about not being able to find KNOPPIX filesystem and dropping to a limited shell while trying to boot versions 4.4.10 and 3.4.9 from a cd. I took your "dsl waitusb" suggestion one step further and tried, "dsl nousb", but still only get the limited shell. Would like to try your suggestion about appending, "knoppix_dir=knoppix KNOPPIX_DIR=KNOPPIX BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix", but am confused about how to do that. Could you clarify how to go about doing that? Thank you. |
Update: Booted DSL 4.4.10 from my desktop computer, and then installed DSL to a USB flash drive via DSL's USBHDD utility. Using this USB drive, I WAS able to boot my laptop. Hmmm... still don't understand why I can't boot the laptop (1 year old HP Pavilion) from the CD.

I am having the same problem. Cannot boot from live CD obtained from the Damn Small Linux Book. Also downloaded newer iso image dsl 4.4.10 Still cannot find Knoppix file system. I would like to see a solution as well. Paul

linus72, setting knoppix_dir (in lowcase) option helped me.
thanks. (my installation resides on USB flash in non-root directory) |

DSL Linux is set to get KNOPPIX file from CD Rom, by default. This file is very big to fit in old PCs, then it remains on CD ROM.
