Audio card not working
As you might tell from other threads I have been tinkering with dsl on some quite old hardware. I've come to like it alot. But I once again run into a problem: my sound card isn't working. When I boot it says something about loading a driver for a sound card and even shows it in system stats under hardware. But when I play an audio file I get a message telling me to check stuff like audio drivers and if it's recognized. I'm clueless. Under system stats it comes up as Rockwell chameleon combo card [ ac97 audio controller ] an driver as via82cxxx_audio. I don't think that's my sound card but im not sure what It is so I will check soon.
If you guys want more specifics just ask. I'm willing to cooperate and am active ( I won't just post this and never say anything again ) All help I appreciated Thanks |
I spent some time googling to try and find a driver. Here is a link to the driver...
-->http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/riptide/index.php This is an old card, and the notes says it works with 2.2 and 2.4 kernels; and its OSS not Alsa. You need to compile the driver. If you look at the bottom left of that page, you will see other links to the Riptide Audio driver. I do not have this hardware, so I have no experience with it. Best of luck... |
hi
yeah good luck if oss works stay with it otherwise readon alsa has (put in a code box for display purposes only) Module snd-via82xx Code:
Module for AC'97 motherboards based on VIA 82C686A/686B, 8233, http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh when you download the script it changes its name then make it executable chmod +x (sciptname) Otherwise post the output of Code:
lspci -v |
Thanks for the link to the driver! I'll try it out tommorow and report back with results. hopefully it works. I think riptide is the audio card now that I think about it.
If not I'll try what aus9 said. |
Ok so I tried the driver this morning. But I'm having an issue. Here's what I did. I downloaded the tar.gz for the riptide card. Extracted it in the prompt and navigated to the folder, where I ran make install. But it says, bash: make: command not found. So how do I fix this? The only thin I did differently was change the folder name so it was easier to type in.
Or should I move on or try something else? |
I believe you need to install kernelsource, gnu-utils and gcc1-with-libs to compile drivers
|
I agree, let us know what happens when you get the kernel source, gnu-utils etc. installed.
|
unfortunately after installing the three packages it still gives me errors. but there is progress.

Doubtful you will get it going-

There as talk that the riptide drivers had been made to work with alsa, but that was a long time ago- http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/arch.../msg04621.html IMO its not worth trying that hard anyway, a 'not good but better than AC-97' sound card which works with linux is worth, ohh, about $5 these days...... |
I would still like to try to get them to work. Anybody know how I can fix this still?
|
if that oss is not playing or too time consuming etc be aware of my post showing there is the ac97 quirk
so pls post your lspci -v in a code box but add I need to see your full output for lsmod 2) it is possible to forecast...you have alsa already running...and the module loaded has not used the quirk feature. I can build you a blacklist module config or a remove alsa modules so that you can manually test something like Code:

I forgot to mention that I still have some browser issues so prefer not to edit.
if you prefer to try my alsa attempted solution I will also need to know what configs you have ie any asoundrc? any modprobe.conf any rc.local entry for sound to give you a better idea of my plans for you...if I am any good? here is my howto http://techpatterns.com/forums/about1813.html altho its designed for deb users I am sure other alsa users if have skills can follow it as well good luck ---------- Post added 02-11-11 at 07:30 ---------- I forgot to mention that I still have some browser issues so prefer not to edit. if you prefer to try my alsa attempted solution I will also need to know what configs you have ie any asoundrc? any modprobe.conf any rc.local entry for sound to give you a better idea of my plans for you...if I am any good? here is my howto http://techpatterns.com/forums/about1813.html altho its designed for deb users I am sure other alsa users if have skills can follow it as well good luck |

since your sound modules are loading properly and I don't use them can you post a link as to the steps you took pls?
yes I am aware we may not have any sound module but lets eliminate any build issues? |
back to your compile attempt
did you download the tarball? http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/ript...3122800.tar.gz did you spot you need a certain compiler version which you do not appear to have? gcc version 2.95.4 or similar is required to compile modules for your kernel I don't use DSL so can not help....but if interested in NOT buying a cheap sound card....maybe you could try puppy or tinycore tinycore developer is ex-DSL and puppy is due to google hit http://www.mepis.org/archives/node/10797 Altho its 2006 http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/vie...d35c42579963d9 suggest you try puppy out in live cd post the output in a code box for aplay -l lsmod lspci if puppy works we should be able to cheat and see how to make alsa work with dsl? ---------- Post added 02-11-11 at 11:00 ---------- back to your compile attempt did you download the tarball? http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/ript...3122800.tar.gz did you spot you need a certain compiler version which you do not appear to have? gcc version 2.95.4 or similar is required to compile modules for your kernel I don't use DSL so can not help....but if interested in NOT buying a cheap sound card....maybe you could try puppy or tinycore tinycore developer is ex-DSL and puppy is due to google hit http://www.mepis.org/archives/node/10797 Altho its 2006 http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/vie...d35c42579963d9 suggest you try puppy out in live cd post the output in a code box for aplay -l lsmod lspci if puppy works we should be able to cheat and see how to make alsa work with dsl? |
No I do not have a bios entry that I know of... I might look around though.
Which is the modem part of this? The only jacks on it are an audio out and a game port ( which I have a game pad connected to ). The modem and Ethernet are on different cards. Or maybe I missed something If the "modem" is actually the game port then it could be disabled as I don't see any use except for my games, which I still boot windows for. Even a real modem could. As Long as it does not effect my ethernet. These are the the steps I took: 1. Downloaded the generic riptide tar.gz (not the auto installer) 2. Extracted it using the terminal to /home/dsl/ 3. Renamed it to riptide for easy typing 4. Navigated to it in terminal, cd /home/dsl/riptide/ 5. Ran make install 6. bash: make: command not found, I came here for help 7. Installed all three packages listed. One didn't seem to download but using a .uci instead of the .dsl worked 8. Repeated steps 4 and 5 9. Got permission denied errors like crazy 10. Ran as root 11. Got the errors as posted earlier 12. Ran ripconfig just to see. Got the message as posted earlier That should be everything. So whats this about a module not loading? What should be my next move? I also can't thank you enough aus9. You have been so helpfull to me and given me plenty of help. And thanks for trying camorri. Edit: Sorry I missed this post... Must have posted wile i was typing. I have tried puppy before and it simply won't boot. Wary puppy boots but is too slow to even open a file browser. See i only have 64mb ram. That's why i use dsl |
----what is your next move --- is up to you.
as cascade9 suggested you could look for a cheap sound device I gather you use ethernet which is good so .....the modem has to have sound....it can interfere with a real sound device. that is why I wanted you to disable in your bios. I suggest you look at tinycore or its smaller cousin microcore. I suggest you then ask for compiling help at the tinycore forums. I have used tinycore's oss and alsa on my real hardware....but I no longer use it or post there but I am pretty sure once you install the compiltec packages (auto gets the dependencies) when you re-run the riptide stuff using root....post there and someone is bound to help you (I hopes) Quote:
I don't think I can help you any more. compiling is not my strong suit. good luck |
I think I will give up on the compiling. It just seems like it won't work at all. I might look around for a cheap sound device if I really want it, but I might just end up using the pc for other stuff. Feel free to sugest any cards that are compatible though.
Thank for everybody's help and sugestions! |
