lots of questions

Hallo
I installed a few days ago the mandriver 2005 distribution on my pc & I have some questions (they may sound ridiculously easy - but I just discovered the world of linux!!!)

1. I do own a winmodem (diamond supra 56k) is there a way that I get connected to the internet with this modem or should I better buy a modem supported by the specific distriution?

2. I have some difficulties writting in greek with oppenoffice. Although I can write polytonic greek on linux e.g. on a "find" tag or on address bar of firefox, it was impossible for me to write polytonic greek with oppenofice. What do you suggest?

3. Is there a good software for web editing, that I can downlad? (like macromedia suite?)

4. Are there any statistical programms avaliable (like spss, statistica or Stata)

Thank you for your time

I.G.S.

please excuse my bad english spelling - the computer did not have MS word processor installed...

3. Amaya, Bluefish, Screem and/or Quanta are nice programs for web editing/design.

2. Oo is apparently able to spell polyphonic Greek as a google search revealed -
a hunch would be to change your location settings etc in Tools>Option>Language Setting

or have a look at this webpage - (they should be able to help you)

I use NVU as my web editor because I am not a heavy duty web editor. I like it because it's very easy to use and is really similar to Frontpage, even has all the same tabs. With your modem you'll need to go to www.linmodems.org and get the software there. I personally have not messed with it or read up on it because I am on a LAN at my university and have no need for it, but that is the website for it.

modem

You might want to look at getting an external serial modem. Those are very easy to set up. Internal pci modems are problematic at best. Conexant and Lucent can be set up with some work, but others are next to impossible for the programming impaired.:D
